The killer trio: Kavyashree, Gautham and Gauvrav

Karthik Raj, a resident of Sudarshan Nagar in Pajeer was murdered during his jogging routine on October 22, 2016 near Asaigoli under the limits of Konaje police station.

BJP and other saffron groups had not only staged several protests in connection with the murder but also had made apparent attempts to give communal tinge to the case. On January 1, local BJP M P Nalink Kumar Kateel had threatened to arson his district if the police failed to catch the accused.

However, after a prolonged investigation, the police on Friday arrested victim’s sister Kavyashree, her boyfriend Gautham (26) and his younger brother Gaurav (19), both residents of Pandith House. According to reliable sources, a senior police officer, who was part of the investigation in this sensational murder case in the beginning, is a relative of Karthik Raj and Kavyashree.

Kavyashree’s fight with husband and new love

It is learnt that Karthik Raj had spent huge money for the grand wedding of her sister Kavyashree with an NRI. Her husband is currently working in United Arab Emirates. However, Kavyashree decided to divorce him as they often used to fight with each other. Karthik Raj had tried his best to convince her sister not to separate from her husband but in vain.

Mangaluru city police commissioner M Chandra Sekhar, who announced the arrests on Saturday told media persons that Kavyashree and Gautham became friends after she got a job in Kanachur Hospital. The friendship led to love and this had irked Karthik Raj, who took her sister to task.

She hired boyfriend to attack her brother

Annoyed by the elder brother’s opposition to her new love, Kavyashree hired her boyfriend Gautham to attack him. However, during interrogation she reportedly told police that she had asked Gautham only to brutally attack Karthik Raj and not to kill him.

Gutham, who building a house at Kondana, seized the opportunity to extract money from Kavyashree. He had demanded Rs 5 lakh from Kavyashree to hire a person to attack her brother and she had promised to pay the same. However, instead of hiring others, Gautham sought the help of his own brother Gaurav to execute the plan. The duo followed Karthik Raj on a motorbike and attacked him with rod on the road. Initially it appeared to be a case of road accident. However, post-mortem report had confirmed that it was a case of murder.

Mangaluru: A heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded in the quiet Bellayuru village on the outskirts of Mangaluru as a man’s life ended on a railway track following an apparent double murder. Authorities from the Mulki police station identified the man as Karthik Bhat, 32, whose lifeless body was discovered on the tracks with his head positioned on the rail, indicating a tragic suicide.

Nearby, police recovered keys to a scooter and a house, which eventually led them to uncover a series of chilling events. Following the trail, officers located Bhat’s scooter parked near Mahammayi Temple. Inside the vehicle, they found documents confirming his identity, including an RC, insurance papers, and his driving license.

Their search continued to Bhat's home in Pakshikere, Kemral village, where they discovered a locked room. With the keys retrieved from the tracks, police unlocked the door, only to be confronted by a horrifying sight. The bodies of Priyanka (28) and her young son Hriday (4) lay in a pool of blood, pointing to a brutal murder that occurred just hours before Bhat’s suicide.

Initial investigations suggest Bhat, beleaguered by ongoing family disputes, committed the murders of his wife and son on the evening of November 8 before tragically ending his own life. A death note found in his diary hinted at his mental state and tragic intentions.

Priyanka’s family, residing in Shivamogga, was informed of the incident. The couple, married for six years, now leaves behind grieving relatives and unanswered questions. Police have initiated formal proceedings, collecting statements from family members as they continue their investigation into the tragic sequence of events.

Mangaluru: A tragic accident took place on Saturday at Chembugudde near Thokkottu, claiming the life of a 47-year-old woman after a tanker lorry ran over her. The victim, identified as Rahmat H Rashid, was riding pillion with her husband, Abdul Rashid G, on their scooter.

The couple was traveling from Yenepoya Hospital to Bajpe when the scooter skidded on the poorly maintained road. Rahmat fell onto the road and was fatally struck by a tanker lorry that was coming from behind. Despite being rushed to the hospital, doctors declared her dead upon arrival.

The incident prompted a swift response from the DYFI Ullal Taluk Committee, which staged a protest on Saturday night, condemning the unsafe condition of the road. Nithin Kuthar, president of the committee, criticized MLA and Legislative Assembly Speaker UT Khader for failing to ensure safe infrastructure, despite touting the road as toll-free.

Kuthar demanded immediate repairs, warning that the committee would march to the MLA’s office with black flags if the road is not fixed within a week.

Former DYFI State President Sunil Kumar Bajal also voiced frustration over the deteriorating condition of Thokkottu market, highlighting the struggles people face while crossing roads riddled with dangerous potholes. In response to public outcry, temporary repairs were made to the road at Chembugudde on Sunday, though locals remain wary and demand a more permanent solution.
