The persons who are held guilty are the first accused C.K. Muhammed Noushad (37) from Anachal in Neeleswaram; O.M. Askar (31) from Thrissur, Muhammed Rameez (28) from Kottapuram near Neeleswaram, O.M. Shihab (33) from Thrissur, C. Nimith (43) of Eda Chovva in Kannur, K.P. Ameer (25) of Changaramkulam in Malappuram, and M.K. Jaseer (22) of Manthalam in Malappuram.

They will be sentenced on Thursday. They may face up to life imprisonment.

The eighth accused, A Mohsin of Nileshwaram, whose car was used for the crime, was let off for lack of evidence. Accused number one and three, Naushad and Rameez, are distantly related to Salam Haji and had zeroed in on his house to make a quick buck. The prosecution was represented by senior lawyers P Rajan and M J Johnson. According to the prosecution, the gang, led by Naushad and Rameez, turned up at Salam Haji's house around 10.30 pm on August 4, 2013.

On hearing the calling bell, Salam Haji opened the door and five members of the gang barged into the house and overpowered Salam. Naushad and Rameez stayed outside. The gang thrashed the house owner till he died, said Special Prosecutor Rajan.

"Then they gagged Salam Haji and tied his hands and legs to make it look he is alive so that his wife and two children would not make noise and attract attention," he said. The gang was in the house for nearly 90 minutes, and during that time they constantly received direction from Naushad and Rameez, Rajan said. They also damaged the electronic surveillance and security system. But during the operation, Naushad made a call to the gang from a neighbour's landline phone, which helped the police put him under the suspects' list, the special prosecutor said.

On further analysis of their mobile phone records, the police picked up Mohsin, and later the entire gang. During the trial, 114 witnesses, including forensic experts of Pariyaram Medical College and nodal officers of Idea and Airtel telecom companies, were examined, said Rajan.

The District and Sessions Court here on Tuesday held seven persons guilty of the murder of Gulf-based businessman A.B. Abdul Salam Haji at Vellappu, near Thrikkaripur, on August 4 last year. The court acquitted one person for want of evidence.

P Rajan and M J Johnson appeared for the prosecution.

Udupi: In a shocking case of investment fraud, a 72-year-old man from Udupi, Karnataka, lost Rs 49 lakh after falling prey to a deceptive stock market scheme. The incident highlights the growing menace of online scams targeting unsuspecting individuals.

According to the complaint filed by Francis Castelino, an unknown individual added his son's mobile number to a WhatsApp group titled "Stock Market Navigation." The group shared stock market insights and promised lucrative returns, convincing Castelino’s son to invest. Trusting the information, the son persuaded his father to make substantial investments.

On December 30, 2024, Castelino transferred Rs 17,00,000, his wife contributed Rs 10,50,000, and their son invested Rs 21,50,000 to the bank account provided by the fraudsters.

However, when Castelino attempted to withdraw the invested money, he and his family were pressured to reinvest further. Realizing that the promised profits and their principal amount were not forthcoming, the family approached the police for help.

A case has been registered at the Udupi CEN Police Station under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the IT Act and 318(4) BNS. Investigations are underway to track down the culprits and recover the lost funds.

Mangaluru: Establishing a Beary Development Corporation is a valid demand, but its implications must be carefully studied, remarked Speaker UT Khader. He proposed forming an expert committee to evaluate the corporation’s potential impact on the Beary community during a district-level conference of the Beary-speaking community, organized by the Akhila Bharata Beary Mahasabha at Kudmul Ranga Rao Town Hall on Wednesday.

Khader expressed concerns over inefficiencies in existing government-established corporations, such as unfilled leadership positions, lack of appointed members, and insufficient funding. “The Beary Development Corporation must avoid similar pitfalls,” he emphasized. He noted that the Minorities Development Corporation already provides various schemes for Beary Muslims, urging a detailed assessment to ensure the new corporation’s funding does not fall short of current provisions, which could disadvantage the community.

Praising the industrious and self-respecting nature of the Beary community, Khader highlighted the respect Beary elders once commanded in villages. He encouraged the youth to uphold this legacy and actively contribute to the community’s progress. Additionally, he commended the Beary youth for their swift and dedicated responses during emergencies, which have garnered widespread recognition.

Khader underscored the importance of unity, cautioning against fostering divisions within the community. He also stressed the critical role of education in development, urging the maintenance of detailed records for SSLC and PUC students to track progress.

The event was presided over by Azeez Baikampadi, president of the Akhila Bharata Beary Mahasabha. Among the dignitaries present were former MLA Mohiudeen Bava and retired police officer GA Bawa. Dr. UT Ifikhar Ali Farid, honorary president of the Akhila Bharata Beary Mahasabha and chairman of the Karnataka State Allied and Healthcare Council, was felicitated during the program.

In notable initiatives, Kanachuru Monu, chairman of Kanachuru Medical College, unveiled the Mahasabha’s new website, while Sheikhabba Karnire of Expertise Company, Jubail, launched an IAS-IPS program aimed at empowering the Beary community.

Mangaluru: The Tannirbhavi beach stretch up to the forest department's Tree Park is on the brink of a remarkable transformation under the ‘One Beach, One Destination’ initiative. This ambitious project aims to elevate the beach into a top-tier tourist hotspot through comprehensive upgrades and strategic developments.

Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan MP shared updates during a press briefing on Tuesday, revealing that fresh tenders have been floated for maintaining the main beach. The technical evaluation of tenders for the Tannir Bhavi Blue Flag Beach is nearing completion, with the financial bids set to open shortly. “We are pleased to see major players participating in the tender process,” the DC remarked.

For the main beach, the maintenance contract will span 10 years. Meanwhile, the Blue Flag Beach’s successful bidder will face a progressive financial model—starting with a Rs 50 lakh payment in the first year, escalating to Rs 2 crore by the 10th year, alongside a minimum 5% revenue share for the administration. “Upon completion of the development, the beach will feature continuous activities to enhance its appeal,” he added.

Approximately 90% of the beach’s development work is already complete. Eco-friendly initiatives such as waste management systems and solar installations are operational at the Blue Flag Beach. While entrance work by Mangaluru Smart City Limited is ongoing, the beach remains accessible to the public. Entry fees, set in accordance with Blue Flag guidelines, aim to support sustainable maintenance efforts.

The ‘Blue Flag’ certification represents a global standard in eco-tourism, ensuring clean bathing water, state-of-the-art amenities, safety measures, and sustainable development. Karnataka’s Padubidri and Kasarkod beaches are among the few in India to hold this prestigious certification.

Mangaluru Smart City Limited is spearheading the development of the 1.8-acre area, with an investment of approximately Rs 16 crore. Once completed, the Tannirbhavi Beach is expected to stand out as a vibrant and eco-friendly destination, drawing tourists and locals alike.
