Srinagar, Apr 1: At least one civilian protester was killed while dozens others were injured in security forces action near encounter sites at Dragad and Kachdora areas of southern Shopian district on Sunday.
A police official said a youth identified as Zubair Bhat suffered injuries near encounter site at Kachdora when security forces fired upon the protesters. He was shifted to a hospital, where he succumbed.
Reports said intense clashes between stone pelting youth and security forces were going on in most parts of south Kashmir including Shopian and Anantnag. Over 50 protesters received injuries after police and paramilitary forces used tear smoke shells and fired pellet guns on them, local media reports said.
Reports of clashes and spontaneous shutdown were received from other parts of the Valley including old city Srinagar. The clashes erupted in the backdrop of multiple encounters between militants and security forces in south Kashmir, in which 12 ultras have been killed so far.
The killing of a civilian and militants has put Kashmir Valley on the boil again. The latest civilian killing comes nearly a month after four civilians were killed in army firing in the same district on March 5.
