Udupi, Dec 26: A woman and her son were rescued by the locals when they were carried away by high waves at Malpe beach on Wednesday.
Shilpa (32), her two daughters Devika (12) and Aishwarya (10), and her son Surya Yadav (5) had come to Malpe beach at around 10 a.m.
Surya went to play in the sea, but was pulled in by the waves. Ms. Shilpa jumped into the water to save him, but she too got carried away in the current. When the children and others on the beach started shouting, some local persons nearby jumped into the water and rescued both the mother and son.
Malpe police reached the spot and took the mother and son to the hospital. While the mother was admitted to the District Government Hospital in Udupi, the boy has been admitted to Adarsh Hospital. Both are receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Units of the two hospitals.
The family resides in Sulibele near Hosakote in Bangalore Rural District. The family was on a pilgrimage trip and had come to Udupi after visiting Dharmasthala. Ms. Shilpa's husband Anand had left for Udupi after he was informed of the incident, the police said.
A police official said Home Guards should be deployed at Malpe beach to warn the people against getting into the sea. People who came from other districts, especially from the plains (or above the Ghats), had no idea about the strength of the waves and needed to be dissuaded from venturing too deep into the sea or swimming in it, he said.
Superintendent of Police M.B. Boralingaiah said the Home Guards were being deployed at the Malpe beach on rotation every three months. But for the last few days, they were not there. They were expected to be deployed soon. Currently, a couple of police constables would be present at the beach during the peak hours to dissuade people from getting into the sea, he said.
Prashanth Shetty, District Commandant, Home Guards, said his office had forwarded the renewal request for putting Home Guards at Malpe beach from the District Administration to the Bangalore office of the Home Guards. “As soon as it is sanctioned from Bangalore, we will deploy Home Guards. The renewal is being done once in three months,” he said.
