Mangalore, Feb 18: In what could have been a major catastrophe, a lorry carrying highly inflammable liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders rammed into an electric pole and turned turtle on the road near Panemangalore on the outskirts of the city on Monday late-night.
The driver of the lorry which was carrying around 450 domestic cylinders has miraculously escaped in the incident with minor injuries. The lorry was plying from Mangalore.
It is learnt that the driver lost control over the lorry while negotiating a curve at Kallurti near Panemangalore and rammed into an electric pole.
The intensity of the collision was such that the electric pole was collapsed and the lorry turned turtle on NH 75.
The accident triggered tensions in the region as the rumours of gas leakage began to spread.
Hover, the fire tenders and police personnel from nearby station rushed to the spot and confirmed that all cylinders were intact. Immediate measures were taken to unload all the cylinders to other vehicles.
