Bangalore, Jan 22: In another battleground state of Karnataka, the ruling Congress is still ahead of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Janata Dal Secular (JDS).

With 28 seats in the Lok Sabha, Karnataka is expected to play an important role in the next elections. According to the projections provided by Chennai Mathematical Institute's Director Professor Rajeeva Karandikar, Congress will win 10-18 seats, BJP 6-10 and JDS 4-8.

Even though its popularity rating is lower than what it was six months ago, the Congress has the backing of 42 per cent voters. The main opposition BJP is making a good progress and has gained 12 per cent votes in the last six months.

The BJP is likely get 32 per cent votes if elections are held in January 2014 according Lokniti-IBN National Tracker poll. The JDS is expected to garner 18 per cent, the AAP 3 per cent and others 5 per cent votes respectively.

Karnataka has 28 Lok Sabha seats. In the 2009 elections, the BJP won 19, Congress 6 and the JDS 3 seats respectively.

The poll tracker findings prove that most people are opposed to the re-entry of former CM BS Yeddyurappa into the BJP. Overall 50 per cent respondents are opposed to it. Only 32 per cent are backing his re-entry. Among the traditional BJP backers, 53 per cent are supporting his re-entry and 37 per cent are against it.

Surprisingly, among the Lingayats, who are considered the biggest backers of Yeddyurappa, 51 per cent voters are opposing his re-entry. Only 30 per cent Lingayats are backing it.

Overall, 43 per cent respondents feel that Yeddyurappa would be a liability for the BJP. Only 29 per cent feel that he would be an asset. Among the traditional BJP backers, 37 per cent feel that he would be a liability and 47 per cent feel that he would be an asset.

On Congress government in the state

Most respondents are aware of the populist schemes launched by the Siddaramaiah government. Two of his populist schemes Anna Bhagya and Ksheera Bhagya are very well known across the state.

Overall 46 per cent respondents also feel that the Congress government in Karnataka is better than the previous BJP government. Only 21 per cent respondents feel that the BJP government was better than the Congress government.

Among the traditional Congress backers, 78 per cent feel that the Congress government is better. Among the traditional BJP supporters, 51 per cent feel that their government was better.

Interestingly, six out of 10 respondents feel that the JDS of the HD Deve Gowda should fight the Lok Sabha elections on its own. Among the few who want the JDS to tie-up, there is a divided opinion on who it should ally with. While 40 per cent respondents back a Congress-JDS alliance, 35 per cent back a JDS-BJP alliance.

High level of satisfaction

Satisfaction with the Congress government in the state is very high. Over 71 per cent respondents say that they are happy with the performance of the Congress government in the state. Just 24 per cent voters say they are dissatisfied.

Siddaramaiah is more popular than his party and 76 per cent respondents are happy with him. Just 20 per cent say that they are not happy with him.

However, despite high level of satisfaction with the state government and the chief minister, there is hardly any pro-government mood. Just 36 per cent voters feel that state government should get another chance with 34 per cent of the opinion that it should not.

UPA very unpopular

Like most of India, the Congress-led UPA at the Centre is very unpopular in Karnataka too with 52 per cent respondents dissatisfied with the Central government. Interestingly, PM Manmohan Singh's ratings are still better than his government's ratings with 53 per cent respondents feeling that they are happy with his performance.

One more interesting thing is dissipation of the pro-UPA mood seen in Karnataka soon after Assembly polls. A total of 49 per cent respondents feel that the UPA government at the Centre should not get another chance and just 33 per cent back it.

Modi leads PM race

Like most other states, BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is leading the PM race also in Karnataka with 28 per cent respondents backing him for the post of PM. Rahul Gandhi has got 19 per cent support. Interestingly, Sonia Gandhi has got 14 per cent support for the post of PM. Local leader and former PM H D Deve Gowda has got 8 per cent backing for the post of PM.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka Food Safety and Quality Department has issued an urgent warning following the discovery of potentially cancer-causing chemicals in cakes sold by certain bakeries across the state.

Recent tests conducted by the department revealed that some cake samples, particularly those with vibrant colors, contain harmful synthetic coloring agents such as Allura Red, a substance known to pose health risks. The findings have raised concerns about the use of artificial colors in bakery products, especially given their potential link to cancer and other serious health conditions.

"We routinely test various food products, and this time, our officials noticed unusually dark-colored cakes on the market," said Srinivas K, Commissioner of Food Safety for Karnataka. "Upon testing, we found that a few cakes contained Allura Red, a synthetic dye associated with health risks."

The use of artificial colors, especially in popular cakes like red velvet and pineapple varieties, is widespread as it attracts customers, particularly children. However, many bakers prefer using natural, safer alternatives, while some opt for synthetic dyes to enhance the cake's visual appeal.

"Most bakeries use permissible, natural colors that are safe for consumption. Unfortunately, a few are resorting to synthetic dyes just to make their cakes more attractive," said a bakery owner from Electronic City, speaking anonymously.

Medical experts are warning that consuming synthetic colors can lead to numerous health issues, including asthma and allergic reactions.

"Some of these artificial dyes are carcinogenic, and prolonged exposure could have serious consequences, especially for children and young adults," cautioned Dr. Vandana G, a private medical practitioner.

While the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) confirms that only a limited number of samples tested positive for harmful colors, legal action is being taken against the violators.

"There is no need for widespread panic or halting production. We are closely monitoring the situation, and only a few bakeries were found to be non-compliant. Rest assured, appropriate legal measures are underway," assured an FSSAI official.

Udupi Superintendent of Police, Dr. Arun K, stated that the arrests followed after an immigration incident involving one of the group's members.

Muhammed Manik, one of the arrested individuals, was caught attempting to travel to Dubai via Mangaluru International Airport with a fake passport. Alert immigration officers at the airport detained him and handed him over to the Bajpe police, who registered a case. Following this, the Udupi police, acting on the information provided by the Bajpe police and immigration authorities, conducted an investigation that led to the arrest of the seven individuals in Hoode village, Paduthonse, Udupi.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Hakeem Ali (24), Sujon S K alias Farooq (19), Ismail S K (30), Kareem S K (20), Salam S K (22), Rajikul S K (20), and Mohammed Sojib (20), all hailing from Bangladesh.

The group entered India without any valid documentation and managed to acquire fake Aadhaar cards, which they used to stay in the country illegally. According to police sources, a person named Kajol from Agartala assisted them in obtaining the fraudulent Aadhaar cards, while a Bangladeshi named Usman facilitated their illegal entry into India under the guise of employment. Both Kajol and Usman are currently at large.

The Malpe police have registered cases under several sections, including Sections 19(2), 318(4), 336(2), 336(3), 340(2), and 190 of the BNS, related to fraud and illegal entry. Interrogations are ongoing as the police seek further details in connection with the case.

Mysuru: Chairman of JD(S) core committee and Chamundeshwari constituency MLA G T Devegowda on Thursday expressed his solidarity with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah saying the latter need not resign, while lambasting leaders of his own party and alliance partner BJP, including Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy.

In his speech during Mysuru Dasara inauguration he said that if persons against whom FIR is registered have to resign, many leaders from all the three parties, including Opposition Leader R Ashoka, will have to resign.

“All are sitting in glass houses... Since I know Siddaramaiah well, I am talking about him. At a time when mines and real estate are ruling politics, Siddaramaiah has survived in politics. He has never done any favour,” Devegowda said.

He added, “Allegations against Siddaramaiah are unexpected and accidental. If the Governor and Chief Justice order an investigation, it does not mean that he should resign."

He continued, asking, "Have they told Siddaramaiah to resign or have they asked to imprison him? When a person becomes a Central minister, he or she should realise their dignity and responsibility. Instead of recognising the good work done by Siddaramaiah, they ask him to resign. Will Kumarswamy (facing an FIR) resign? Should Siddaramaiah, who has become CM with a support of 135 MLAs, resign?"

"Opposition leaders are not remembering the good work of earlier CMs Kengal Hanumanthaiah, Veerendra Patil, Ramakrishna Hegde, H D Deve Gowda or S M Krishna. Karnataka is a model state. It is a bad trend to topple an elected government which is doing good work,” he further said.

Devegowda added, “Siddaramaiah is Goddess Chamundeshwari’s ‘Varaputra’ and hence has her blessings during tough times. He won the election in Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency, when the BJP-JD(S) government was in power in 2006. With the blessings of the Goddess, he has held varied positions right from becoming an MLA for the first time in 1983. He presented 15 budgets and has become CM for a second time. He took H C Mahadevappa, a Dalit leader to the state level. Siddaramaiah has the support of Deputy CM D K Shivakumar as ‘Jodeththu’. Blessings of the beneficiaries of guarantee schemes are with him (Siddaramaiah).”

Siddaramaiah said, “Devegowda was a MUDA member. He knows the truth. Hence, he is saying this. His words have filled strength in me. ‘Satyameva Jayate’, Truth will always triumph.”
