Uppinangady, March 17: Dr Ravindranath Shanbhag, president of the Human Rights Protection Foundation, has urged the anti-andosulfan activists to seek legal help to make the company liable to pay compensation to the victims of the menace.
He was addressing a meeting of the presidents and vice presidents of the Gram Panchayats under Puthur Taluk convened to collate information on the people affected by endosulfan menace.
He urged the Gram Panchayats to conduct a survey of the people who are suffering from mental illness, cancer, asthma, disability, and also people who died of cancer. The anti-endosulfan committee will submit the details to the District health officers, he added.
Despite a ban being in place against spraying of endosulfan, there have been reports of the chemical being sprayed at cashew plantations in the taluk. The government should find out the guilty people and punish them, the meeting urged.
Alankaru endosulfan Virodhi Horata Samithi president Peer Mohammed Saheb presided over the meeting. Kokkada committee president Shridhar Gowda, Alankar Taluk Panchayat president Dayananda Gowda, GP president Keshava Gowda, Perabe GP president Gangaraatna Vasantha, Nekkiladi GP president Amitha Harish, vice president Asgar Ali, Hirebandady GP president Geetha, among others, were present.
