Mangalore, Dec 5: With the hypothetical situation of a gas leakage, BASF organized a mock drill to demonstrate ways to tackle the situation effectively, at Ottekar in Bala region at the Mangalore Liquid Import Facility premises.
In the drill, the situation was that 20 staff and workers were injured, local residents were to be evacuated and gruel centres had to be put up along with providing medical care to the ones demanding it.
The mock drill is held once in six months, keeping the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy in mind.
The mock drill was witnessed by Additional DC Dayananda and Assistant Commissioner Prashanth.
At about 11 am, fire was seen at the LPG collection unit of Mangalore Liquid import Facility premises. The fire fighters were on the spot by 11.05 am once the siren was blown. The ambulances too were kept ready at the spot to tackle casualties.
The injured were first taken to the temporary medical aid centres and the ones who were severely injured were rushed to a hospital at Mukka.
Since the possibilities of gas spreading to nearby areas is high, the residents of Jokatte and Bala villages were temporarily evacuated. Taffic diversion was also in force at Bala area.
The mock drill was completed by 11.56 am.
