Mangalore, Feb 10: Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister and Minister for Forest, ecology environment B Ramanath Rai has called upon the Banjara community people to give priority to education in order to improve their socio- economic condition.
He said unless the members of the Banjara community got their children, especially girls, educated it would be difficult for them to achieve economic and social development.
He was speaking after inaugurating the Karavali Banjara community meet in Mangalore on Sunday.
Rai further said that female education gives strength to the family. With girls getting educated, society will be free of blind beliefs.
Banjara is one of the communities which have been deprived of social justice. The community needs to attain economical and social progress. Barriers come in the way for the progress of any backward community as we live in a caste dominated system. Reservations help the communities to get into the mainstream of society. The learned class of the community has the responsibility to lead the others in this situation, the minister said.
One should not infuse blind beliefs into society in the name of God, he said and felt for need to ban practices like Bethale seve.
Rai assured of making all possible efforts to provide facilities to Banjara community including allocation of land towards a community hall.
Mangalore South MLA J R Lobo who was the chief guest said that the communities like Bajnara are facing difficulties in getting government facilities meant for them. He called upon the learned class of the community to create awareness among the non-learned group of the community regarding the government benefits. But, only depending upon government facilities will not serve the purpose. Some minority castes like Christianity have come forward through education, without the help of any reservation or without being under the mercy of any government facilities. Hence, more and more youth from the community should get higher education, he said. At the same time, one should not forget their culture, he added.
Karavali Sri Sevalal Banjara Sangha DK district President Jayappa N Lamani presided over the function, Akhila Bharatha Banjara Seva Sangha State President Rama Naika, Kuvempu University Professor Dr Sannarama Naika , MGM?College , Udupi Principal Dr N Hala Naika were present among others.
