Mangalore, Dec 25: In a gesture of goodwill, Muslim Central Committee, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, celebrated the festival Christmas in the presence of Minister for Fisheries and Sports Abhayachandra Jain and Mangalore South MLA J R Lobo at the committee office here on Wednesday.
As part of Christmas celebrations, the gathering cut a Christmas cake in a symbolic gesture of religious harmony.
Speaking on the occasion, vice president of the committee Ibrahim Kodichal said that the religions of Islam, Christianity, Buddhism and Jainism all believed in the concept of one Supreme Being, and celebrating the festivals of one another was supplementary to Indian culture.
Participating in the celebrations, Mr J R Lobo said that all religions were one and there were no differences between Islam and Christianity. “In fact, the three religions – Islam, Judaism and Christianity – have originated from the same place with the same philosophy. India is a classic example to the world, with people of several religions living together in a huge democracy. Responding to the call for peace and harmony on Christmas, we should also maintain peace in our region and try to live as members of the same family,” he said.
Committee member Hameed Kandak said that the committee celebrated the major festivals of other religions with the intention of building and preserving the communal harmony that existed between the communities earlier in the twin districts. Harmony will prevail on earth when people of all religions live and co-exist with each other in harmony, he said.
Mr Jain and Mr Lobo were honoured by the committee members on the occasion.
Former mayor K Ashraf, senior Congress leader Mohammed Badruddin, Aboobaker Kudroli, Ahmed Bava, Mohammed Hanif, Ronald Colaco and others participated in the celebrations.
