Mangaluru, Dec 29: Around four and a half years after a 19-year-old boy was brutally murdered in broad daylight, a local court has sentenced a 23-year-old man to life imprisonment.
The convict is Ashrith alias Ashu, son of former corporator Kamalaksha Bajilakeri. The first additional district and sessions court also directed him to deposit a fine of Rs 1 lakh, of which Rs 90,000 will be handed over to the parents of the victim.
Enraged over a trivial issue, Ashrith had brutally stabbed Boloor resident Sanjay alias Varun, 19, to death in broad daylight near the Kallurti Daivasthana in Hoigebail on May 22, 2014. Incidentally, it was Sanjay’s birthday.
The two, who had previously developed animosity over a trivial issue, picked up a fight on May 22, during which Ashrith called up five of his friends and stabbed Sanjay to death. The other members of Ashrith’s gang were acquitted for lack of evidence.
Judge Sharada B had on December 24 held Ashrith guilty under IPC Sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint). In addition to Rs 90,000, Sanjay’s parents are entitled to seek further compensation from the District Legal Services Authority.
