Mangaluru lawyer who accused NIA of shielding saffron terrorists dropped from prosecutors’ list

Mumbai, Jul 2: Special public prosecutor Rohini Salian, who recently revealed that National Investigation Agency had asked her to go soft on saffron terrorist, does not figure in the latest list of prosecutors appointed by NIA.

The notification, dated May 25 and signed by Joint Secretary M A Ganapti, discloses the names of 33 public prosecutors who would represent NIA in various courts across the country.

However, Salian’s name does not figure in the notification. She had appeared for NIA in 2008 Malegaon blast case, in which four Muslims were killed.

Salian had recently told reporters that an NIA officer had told her to "go soft" on the accused in the Malegaon blast case. She also said that the same officer had told her that she would be replaced.

"I have not got any notification and I have also not received any letter from NIA or the ministry asking me not to appear in Malegoan blasts cases or NIA cases," Salian told media persons.

The new notification says that five lawyers have been appointed as special public prosecutors to represent NIA in Maharashtra. They are Pradhan Chandamal, Nandkishor Rathod, Sunil Gonsalves, Avinash Rasal and Prakash Shetty.

Salian, a lawyer of 25-year standing, is also a prosecutor in Mulund bomb blast case (in which three cases are clubbed together) and 2002 Ghatkopar bomb blast case. She has also appeared in some high-profile TADA cases and MCOCA cases.

Hailing from Mangaluru in Karnataka, she has also served as the Chief Public Prosecutor in Mumbai for close to five years. She was also the public prosecutor in the 1992 J.J Hospital shoot-out case in which underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's aide Subhash Thakur was sentenced to death.

Mangaluru: Suspected murder of youth in train; cops intensify probe

Mangaluru: In a chilling incident that has raised suspicions of foul play, a 35-year-old man was discovered dead inside a train coach traveling from Bengaluru to Murudeshwar.

The deceased, identified as Mouzzan from Kumbarpete, Doddaballapur, worked as a sales representative and was differently-abled. He boarded the train on October 24 from Yesvantpur and occupied the Divyang Coach.

The incident came to light on the morning of October 25 at Udupi, where a railway guard found Mouzzan unresponsive. The railway police immediately rushed him to the hospital, but doctors declared him dead.

With no identification documents on him, the police utilized a label, “RS Tailor Chickpete,” found on his shirt collar to trace his family through WhatsApp, helping his relatives reach Mulki by Saturday.

Upon inspection, police noticed ligature marks around Mouzzan’s neck, hinting at possible foul play. His family reported that his bag and mobile phone were missing, raising further suspicion.

The last known location of his phone was traced to Sakleshpur, suggesting he may have been targeted during the journey. Investigators suspect robbery as a motive and are now actively pursuing leads, with searches underway in Mysuru and Bengaluru.

A case has been filed at Mulki police station, and efforts to uncover the truth behind this tragic incident are intensifying as police work to piece together the circumstances that led to Mouzzan’s untimely death.

BJP created Waqf row with eye on polls, says Karnataka CM as Sangh Parivar demands Zameer Ahmed’s resignation

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday alleged that BJP was raking up the "Waqf issue" with an eye on the upcoming assembly by-polls in the state and elections in neighboring Maharashtra.

Following allegations by a section of farmers in certain parts of the state that their lands were marked as Waqf properties, he reiterated that none of them will be evicted, and notices issued to them will be withdrawn.

"BJP is doing politics. Notices were issued during their (BJP) tenure too, what do they have to say about it? During BJP's tenure over 200 notices were given. One should not practice such dual politics," Siddaramaiah said.

Speaking to reporters here, the CM said, "I have already said that the notices will be withdrawn, where is the issue? In case the notices are issued they will be withdrawn and no one will be evicted, where is the issue?" "Whichever district it is...They (BJP) had also given notices in several districts. Why did they give? Why are they doing such politics? In case notices were served by our government, they will be withdrawn and no farmers will not be evicted....the protest they have planned on November 4 is for politics keeping in mind by-polls in three segments and Maharashtra elections," he added.

A section of farmers from Vijayapura district have alleged that their lands were marked as Waqf properties, and similar allegations have surfaced from a few other places.

The BJP is planning a statewide agitation on November 4, demanding the resignation of Minority Welfare and Waqf Minister B Z Zameer Ahamed Khan, and against the Congress government over the issue.

Accusing the BJP of only doing politics and and not speaking the truth, Siddaramaiah said, "they only speak lies, they make issue out of non issue. Is there any issue in MUDA (site allotment case, in which he is accused and facing probe)? They wanted to make a non issue, an issue." Channapatna, Shiggaon and Sandur Assembly segments will go for by-polls on November 13.

The CM said he will go for campaigning in three assembly segments that will go for bypolls, from November 4 to 11.

He expressed confidence about Congress winning all the three segments.
