Mangaluru, Jan 19: Principal District and Sessions Judge Kadloor Satyanarayanacharya on Friday sentenced a 27-year-old resident of Kolnadu to one year imprisonment on finding him guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in the death of a 45-year-old man in Adyar in March 2017.
According to the charge-sheet, Sadashiva, a resident of Neermarga, had been removed from work by Satish Shetty, owner of Spicy Corner Hotel, a food giant.
At midnight on March 2, 2017, he returned to the hotel for an overnight stay. Prashant (27), who worked in the hotel, objected to this and called Satish Shetty.
Prashant and Satish Shetty assaulted Sadashiva and abandoned him near the gate of Gunashree Vidyalaya near the hotel.
Satish Shetty called Sadashiva’s neice Pramila on March 3, 2017 morning to inform that her uncle was unwell and needs to be admitted to a hospital. Pramila came to the spot along with a few of her neighbours and took Sadashiva to a nearby hospital where he died of injury.
On a complaint by Sadashiva’s elder sister Baby, the Mangaluru Rural Police arrested Prashant. Police Inspector Siddagowda H. Bhajantri filed the charge-sheet against Prashant and Satish Shetty.
As Satish Shetty went absconding, the court split the case and tried Prashant for the offence.
Public Prosector Pushaparaj Adyantaya examined 14 witnesses. The judge on Friday sentenced Prashant to one year imprisonment for the offence under Section 304 (part 2) of Indian Penal Code (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).
The judge recommended to the District Legal Services Authority to award compensation under Karnataka Victim Compensation Scheme to Sadashiva’s mother who is under the care of Baby.
