Mangaluru: January 2019 would be a new chapter in Shevgoor Ramachandra Bhandary aka Omelette Bhandary’s life. But to scores of eggetarians of Mangaluru relishing perfectly cooked omelettes that were served with dollops of love from a tiny store in Mannagudda, will soon be a thing of past. For, after 52 years, Omelette Bhandary, a sobriquet that Bhandary has earned from his devoted customers, has decided to call it quits on December 31.

But what’s in an omelette, you wonder? For foodies of Mangaluru, omelette is an omelette if made at Bhandary Maam’s. At a time when omelettes were mostly home-cooked, Bhandary decided to toy with the idea of breaking eggs at his general store in Mannagudda, something that was unheard then.

“Except for Woodside and Light of Persia at Hampankatta, no other hotels offered omelettes in 1966. My friend had a poultry farm behind Hindi Prachar Samiti and eggs were available for 15 paisa. I decided to experiment with selling omelettes to perk up my rather dull business,” reminisces Bhandary.

It wasn’t easy for Bhandary though. For, members of Goud Saraswath Brahmins to which Bhandary belongs to, egg is a strict no. "During the initial days in the 70's, I recollect that a group of women from my community had even drawn a protest in front my shop for 'spoiling' their kids and allegedly encouraging them to eat the 'forbidden' egg delicacy," he says.

Over the years however, irrespective of community affiliation, egg became a common edible. Infact a group of kids playing cricket match at a nearby ground even used to 'bet' to treat the winning team with Omelette, to the winning side.

“My friend taught me to break the egg and whip up a perfect omelette. I had no hesitation. That’s how I became ‘Omelette Bhandary’,” gushes the 74-year-old.

Bhandary is candid in admitting that there is no secret recipe, it's a simple combination of egg yolk, salt, chopped onion, green chilly, sunflower-oil and expert Bhandary whisk.

Slowly, his customers grew and his shop became the adda of sorts, teeming with students, doctors, officials and the like. Ministers Late Ananth Kumar and Dr VS Acharya were his regular customers. “Whenever ABVP would hold Baithak in Mangaluru, Ananth Kumar who was in ABVP would never miss a chance to visit my shop and relish the omelettes here. Late Dr Venkat Rao of Fr Muller Hospital was my everyday customer,” Bhandary fondly recalls. Apart from omelettes, bull’s eye too was a hit. A single omelette costs Rs 15 while a double omelette is priced at Rs 30 at his shop.

At the height of his popularity in the 80's, Bhandary used to whip 300 egg-yolks a day. Eventually, the name Omelette became a prefix to his surname. "The auto drivers who were his regular customers in fact used 'Omelette Bhandary' as a landmark instead of Mannagudde Gurji while plying the riders," he says.

When Maggi-Noodles first came to the market in 1982, Bhandary vouches that he was first to cook and sell it in his outlet. "But after 2008, I realized that customers for omelette had to wait and I was losing them, as I was busy in cooking Maggi, which takes longer than 2-minutes, " he says with a laugh.

Eventually, he hired his nephews to his help for some time. But, after they too left to make their own future, Bhandary has been working, all alone. But with age catching up, he finds it difficult to run the shop. Besides, there are many stalls selling omelettes at nook and corners of the city that has affected the flow of customers to his shop.

In fact, Bhandary who studied automobile engineering at KPT Mangaluru had dreams of working at Bosch in Bengaluru. “I worked for a couple of industries selling automobile spares but I wanted to work with Bosch. But things changed after my father passed away in 1962 and later my brother, Keshav,” says Bhandary. His friends suggested him to stay back in his native and do something on his own than struggling in Bengaluru. “The risk was totally worth it,” agrees Bhandary.

Bhandary is also known for his social work. He has volunteered to donate blood at least 42 times, claims Bhandary. “My blood group is AB Positive which is a rarity. I have been donating blood for many years. However, now, I have been advised against doing so by the doctors.”

He is the go-to-man in his community and locality during the last rites rituals.

With Bhandary is all set to retire after nearly five decades, ask him what’s on his mind. “I want to travel the whole of India with my wife, Vijayalakshmi Bhandary. I have never shut my shop, except for one visit to Haridwar some years ago. I want to travel now.” As we speak, Bhandary is frequently interrupted by his customers who are visibly upset about his decision to shut his shop. Some are even threatening to barge into his home to have an omelette made by him, laughs off Bhandary.

Today being the last day of Bhandary’s omelette career, one can see many videos on YouTube that pay rich tribute to this humble man from Mannagudda.

Bhandary says he never had any great ambition when he decided to stay back to look after the store. But as Elizabeth David said “..., there is only one infallible recipe for the perfect omelette: your own,” Bhandary too had ‘his own’ to become ‘Omelette Bhandary’, clearly.

Bengaluru: In a boost to the ruling Congress in Karnataka, the party on Saturday swept the by-polls to three Assembly segments, causing a major setback to the BJP-JD(S) alliance in the state.

The Congress has retained Sandur, the seat considered to be its strong hold, and has also bagged Shiggaon and Channapatna segments, which were earlier held by BJP and JD(S) respectively.

The November 13 by-polls to Sandur, Shiggaon and Channapatna Assembly segments had witnessed a fierce fight between the ruling Congress and a combative BJP-JD(S) alliance.

The by-polls to Sandur, Shiggaon and Channapatna were necessitated as the seats fell vacant following the election of their respective representatives -- E Tukaram of Congress, former CM Basavaraj Bommai of BJP, and Union Minister Kumaraswamy of JD(S) to Lok Sabha in May elections.

The by-polls witnessed a straight fight between the ruling Congress and BJP in Sandur and Shiggaon segments, while in Channapatna, JD(S) which is part of the NDA alliance took on the grand old party.

Congress' C P Yogeeshwara won the Channapatna segment, defeating JD(S) candidate and Kumaraswamy's son Nikhil Kumaraswamy, by a margin of 25,413 votes.

Former CM Basavaraj Bommai's son Bharath Bommai of BJP faced defeat against Congress' Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan in Shiggaon Assembly segment by a margin of 13,448 votes.

In Sandur, Congress candidate E Annapoorna, the wife of Bellary MP E Tukaram, won the seat vacated by her husband, by a margin of 9,649 votes.

Congress' win in the by-poll is seen as an endorsement of both Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D K Shivakumar's leadership, and the government's programmes, especially the five guarantee schemes.

Nikhil Kumaraswamy and Bharath Bommai, the third generation of Gowda and Bommai family respectively, who contested this bypolls, have lost. Their fathers and grandfathers had served as Karnataka's Chief Ministers in the past.

While for Bharath Bommai this was his electoral debut, for Nikhil it was his third electoral loss.

Among the three segments, Channapatna was considered to be a high profile battle, where the contest was between C P Yogeeshwara and actor-turned-politician Nikhil Kumaraswamy.

A five-time MLA from the segment and a former Minister, Yogeeshwara had joined the Congress after quitting BJP ahead of nomination.

There were plans to field Yogeeshwara on a JD(S) ticket, but he was not interested in it, and instead wanted Kumaraswamy to support him as BJP candidate. This was not acceptable to Kumaraswamy and his party, following which Yogeeshwara jumped ship.

However, Kumaraswamy had subsequently said he had agreed to Yogeeshwara contesting from BJP, and despite that he jumped ship to Congress, under the influence of Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and his brother and former MP D K Suresh.

Nikhil had faced defeat in 2019 Lok Sabha and 2023 Assembly polls. It is seen as a setback for Kumaraswamy too, as he could not ensure son's win from the Channapatna, the seat he had twice represented in the past.

Congress' win is crucial for Shivakumar, who is also the state Congress chief and his brother Suresh to strengthen their position in their home district of Ramanagara, a Vokkaliga heartland.

In Shiggaon, BJP's Bharath Bommai, son of Basavaraj Bommai lost against Congress' Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan, who had faced defeat against the former Chief Minister in the 2023 Assembly polls.

Initially, former MLA Syed Azeempeer Khadri, a Congress' ticket aspirant, had raised a banner of revolt in Shiggaon, by filing his nomination as an independent, but later withdrew after intervention by party leadership.

In Sandur, Bellary MP Tukaram's wife E Annapurna of Congress won from the seat vacated by her husband, against BJP ST Morcha president Bangaru Hanumanthu, who is considered close to party leader and former mining barron G Janardhan Reddy.

Sandur is a Congress' bastion, and Tukaram had represented it four times.

Congress winning the by-polls is seen as "crucial" for Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to assert himself , amid demands for his resignation following charges against him in the MUDA site allotment case.

There were also behind-the-scenes political activities within the ruling Congress earlier this year, with a few ministers in his Cabinet holding closed door meetings, fueling speculation about leadership change. But such activities came to a halt following instructions from the party high command.

It is equally important for Shivakumar, who has not shied away from openly expressing his Chief Ministerial ambitions, amid speculations over "rotational Chief Minister formula," according to which he will become CM after two-and-half years (in this govt's five years tenure), but they have not been officially confirmed by the party.

The defeat in this by-poll is seen as a setback for state BJP President Vijayendra, who has been facing intense criticism and opposition from a section within the party, who have raised a banner of revolt against his leadership accusing him and his father, veteran leader B S Yediyurappa of "adjustment politics".

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has warned that disciplinary action will be taken against those officials who change the land mutation records and serve eviction notices to farmers under the Waqf Act.

In a letter, the Revenue Department Principal Secretary Rajender Kumar Kataria reminded all regional commissioners and deputy commissioners in the districts that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recently had a meeting following complaints about certain land properties being made in favour of the Karnataka Board of Waqfs.

In the meeting it was decided that all the directions issued previously by any government office or authority to change the mutation records has been withdrawn, the letter said.

It added that all the notices served in the past have also been withdrawn and no action should be taken against the farmers who are cultivating on the said land.

On the directions of the chief minister, the previous letters and the latest reminders served on November 7 to the farmers and land owners have been withdraw, the letter said.

"The officials who served reminder-2 despite the chief minister's direction will face appropriate disciplinary action," Kataria said in his letter.

He said he has been instructed to strictly implement the chief minister's direction.

The fresh direction was issued in poll-bound Karnataka, where bypolls to three crucial assembly segments are due on November 13.

Some farmers in Honwad village in Vijayapura in north Karnataka had alleged last month that they were served eviction notices as the Waqf Board claimed rights over it.

Subsequently, complaints started in pouring in from some other parts of the state.

BJP leader Tejasvi Surya on October 25 alleged that Karnataka Waqf Minister B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan directed the deputy commissioners and revenue officials to register lands in favour of the Waqf Board within 15 days, which resulted in confusion.

On Surya's request, the Chairman of the Joint Committee of Parliament on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, Jagdambika Pal visited Karnataka on November 7 and met farmers in Hubballi, Vijayapura and Belagavi districts who had alleged that their lands were marked as Waqf properties.

Mangaluru: The Ullal police have arrested Manohar, the owner of Vazco Beach Resort, and its manager Bharath in connection with the drowning of three college girls from Mysuru at the resort’s swimming pool on November 17.

City Commissioner of Police Anupam Agrawal confirmed the arrests, stating that a case has been registered under Section 106 of BNS. The bodies of the victims, all in their twenties, have been handed over to their parents. The women had arrived at the resort for a weekend getaway on November 16.

Following the tragic incident, the resort was sealed by officials led by Mangaluru Assistant Commissioner Harshavardhan. The trade license of the resort, issued on June 13, 2024, has been suspended, and the tourism department has temporarily revoked the resort's registration. These actions prohibit the resort from engaging in any tourism-related activities until further notice.

Someshwara TMC Chief Officer stated that the suspension was due to the resort's failure to implement adequate safety measures, which resulted in the loss of three lives. Further investigations are underway.
