Dubai, Dec 16: While Qussai from Syria bagged the coveted Mr Dubai-2013 title, Manoj Shetty and Mohommad Shakeer, two Mangaloreans who had made it to the finals of the prestigious pageant had to be contented with the positions of runners up.
The Capital Hotel-Savage Garden saw Qussai walk away with the title leaving behind 19 contenders from various nations on December 13.
However, the entire venue gave huge round of applause to Manoj and Shakeer, the first and second runners up because it was for the first time in the history of the event that Mangaloreans were making it to the finals.
Manoj Shetty, son of Ramesh and Sharada Shetty couple of Naguri and Mohammaed Shakeer, son of Nayaz Ahmed and Kausar couple of Pandeshwar have been a familiar face in Dubai because of their modeling career, which has been going on smoothly.
Mr Shetty is also a state-level athlete and had won titles in body building. He is the founder of Adventures dance and fashion show in Mangalore. He flew to Dubai in search of a job in 1997.
Mr Shakeer, on the other hand was being looked at as a winner because of his performance in the pageant. He won three awards in Mr Dubai 2013, namely Best Talent (for Bollywood song dance), Best Street-Wear ( for the costume contributed by ESPRIT) and Best Swim-Wear (designed and stitched by Metro Taylors, Dubai).
Mr Dubai pageant for this year began in September with 168 aspirants contesting for the title. Total of 70 aspirants had qualified in the preliminary rounds and 20 were selected during the semi-finals held on November 29. They were trained for a month for the grand finale.
