Bengaluru, Oct 29: A 20-month-old boy was charred to death while his five-year-old brother is battling for life after their father poured petrol on them and set them ablaze before attempting to immolate himself at their house at Talaghattapura, here in the wee hours of Sunday. Domestic row is said to be the reason behind the man’s extreme step.
Srinivas Murthy (35), an electrician, suffered 40% burns and is undergoing treatment at Victoria Hospital. His younger son, Sai Charan, succumbed to burns in the hospital at 5am, while the elder child, Chetan Sai, suffered 80% burns and is critical.
Murthy, who is from T. Narsipur in Mysuru, married Premalatha, a resident of Thyagarajanagar in south Bengaluru, eight years ago. Differences cropped up between them eight months ago, following which Premalatha left to live with her parents. She then started working as a domestic help at an apartment.
According to the police, Murthy often used to go to his in-laws’ house and demand that Premalatha return home, but she always refused. Upset over this, on Saturday he went to the house when his sons were home and Premalatha was away at work. He forced his mother in-law, Jayanthi, to send the children with him so that he could spend some time with them. He promised to bring them back on Sunday evening.
Murthy took the children to his rented house at Anjanapura. He fed them and put them to sleep before going out to drink. He returned home with a bottle of petrol, poured it over the sleeping children, and set them on fire, before immolating himself. Neighbours heard their screams and rushed in. They doused the fire, rushed them to a hospital, and alerted the police.
The Talaghattapura police have registered a case of murder and attempt to murder against Murthy, and are waiting for his recovery to question him.
