Kasargod, Dec 21: Two people were killed and two others sustained severe injuries in a ghastly road mishap occurred on a national highway near Kumble in Kasargod district on Saturday morning.
The tragedy took place when six members of a family were returning home in their car after participating in a Swalat programme held in Bayar. When the driver turned the car to the extreme left in a bid to avoid head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle, the car rolled off the road and plunged into a gorge.
The deceased have been identified as Ibrahim Haji (48), a resident of Eriyal, and his younger sister Zuhra (40). Ibrahim Haji was an active member of Muslim League and president of the working committee of a local Masjid. He was the state treasurer and district secretary of STU, a union of fish traders. He was working for at Kel-Bhel company since last two decades.
The mother of the victims Zainaba (65) and Zuhra's husband M P Mohammed Kunhi (49), from Mogral have been admitted to a hospital in Mangalore. The condition of the duo is said to be serious.
Two more members of the same family who were travelling in the same car escaped unhurt.
A group of Ayyappa devotees that was passing pulled the victims and injured out of the ill-fated car.
A case has registered and investigations are on. The bodies have been handed over to the family members after post-mortem.
