Mangalore, Jan 27: In response to the opposition raised by CITU activists for allegedly being against the employment of locals at the railway goods shed and godown at Panambur, president of Hind Mazdoor Sangh (HMS) Sureshchandra Shetty clarified that his organisation served the interests of labourers who had been working in the city from several years.
Speaking at a press conference here on Monday, he told mediapersons that the labourers working at the railway goods shed and godown were from a poor background and were employed at the railway godown as daily-wage workers. As many as 210 labourers from Bijapur, Bagalkot and other parts of the state have been working at the railway godown from the past 30 years. In such a situation, a group of locals began demanding that they are given work at the same establishment. The same group of protestors also staged a demonstration showing objection to the employment of these labourers, he said, adding that it was not right.
He was referring to the demonstration staged by CITU activists in the city on Monday, under the leadership of CITU leaders Sunil Kumar Bajal and Vasant Acharya. The demonstrators were detained by the police on Monday morning as they approached the residence of Sureshchandra Shetty.
Mr Shetty also said that the demonstration was intentionally staged, and it was "not right" to do so.
