Manglauru, Oct 31: In what could be termed as victory for the local residents and commuters, the council of Mangaluru City Corporation has passed a resolution to recommend to the government to close down the toll gate on NH 66 at Surathkal.
Councillors of both the ruling Congress and the Opposition BJP agreed to the same during Wednesday’s council meeting.
The councillors said that since the toll gate is within the jurisdiction of the corporation and there is one more toll gate on the same highway, about 10 km away at Hejamady, near Mulky, the one at Surathkal should be closed down.
The council’s decision has added strength to the on-going dharna by Tollgate Virodhi Horata Samiti at Surathkal demanding closure of the gate.
The dharna entered its 10th day on Wednesday. In a statement on Wednesday, Muneer Katipalla, president, State unit of the Democratic Youth Federation of India who is leading the dharna, said that the council’s decision was a significant support to the demand.
