Mangalore, Feb 21: “What we need is often within ourselves, but we need to make the journey to discover that what you are seeking is within you,” said Manosh R Sengupta, the man behind the success of few iconic brands in India.
Addressing the gathering at the inaugural ceremony of Media Manthan 2014 – the three-day media fete organised by Department of Mass Communication at St Aloysius College, Mangalore here on Friday, he said that today, they, as students, were in the process of discovering themselves.
“Initially, you are told what is right and wrong, after which, comes the learning. Often, what we learn conflicts with the thought of what you have been taught,” he said, adding that it was a part of evolution and learning.
Citing the story of 'The Alchemist' by Paulo Coelho, he said that the essence of the book was that if one pursued his goal with great passion, the universe would conspire to make it happen. “Another thought that comes from the book is – if you wanted to discover something, you would have to get out of the box, travel out of your boundary to discover it,” he said, encouraging the students to do likewise.
In his presidential address, principal of the college Fr Swebert D'Silva said that everyone was both fascinated and affected by the media, which had two sides to it-good and bad.
Comparing it to the churning of the ocean, he said that media was being churned by paid and neutral forces, and those who were trying to change it.
“The only hope is that ultimately, the media stands for something good,” he said.
He called upon the students to choose what is right, amidst the impact that media and brands made on us.
“We may get swayed by the media, but the process of growing must make us people with responsibility,” he said, adding that education was not merely about learning, which should happen in terms of creativity and newness.
Student convenor Sudeep Shenoy welcomed the gathering.
Staff convenor Laxmi Shenoy, registrar Prof A M Narahari, head of department Vishal Nayak and others were present.
