Moodbidri, Jul 7: The fasting in the month of Ramadan provides Muslims an opportunity for self introspection, said Abdussalam Puthige, editor-in-chief, Vartha Bharathi Kannada daily.
Speaking on the significance of fasting at the 13th annual 'Iftar meet' organised by Alva's Educational Foundation in the college premises at Moodbidri, he said that there are instances of observing fast in every religion as there is a lot to be gained spiritually by fasting.
Mr Puthige said that fasting facilitated a person to reflect on the righteousness of his thoughts and actions. Observing fast as a community fosters harmonious relations among people and an understanding of mutual difficulties, he pointed.
Speaking on the occasion, chief guest Fr Gomes said that mutual love and respect was not limited to persons belonging to the same religion, but applied to the entire mankind. He said that persons from all religions should observe fast.
Presiding over the programme, Alva's Educational Foundation chairman Dr M Mohan Alva said that it was our responsibility of keeping the harmony intact and continuing to lead a life of tolerance and mutual harmony which our forefathers practised and advocated. Celebrating national and religious festivals go a long way in building a peaceful and harmonious relationship among communities, he said.
Former minister K Amarnath Shetty participated in the programme and spoke on the occasion.
Guests such as Kuldeep, Abdul Raouf, Tahsildar Mohammed Isaaq, national level sports achiever Mohammed Ilyas and others were present on the occasion.
Abul Ala Puthige compered the programme, while Hasdullah Ismail proposed a vote of thanks.
