
Chennai, May 31: Well-known multilingual actress Monika aka Rekha Maruthiraj has embraced the religion of Islam and announced the end of her cinema career.
The 26-year-old soft-spoken woman, who now identifies herself as M GRahima, in a press meet announced that Islam gave peace and solace to her life.
Monika announced her decision which she claims to be backed by her parents Maruti Raj and Gracy. She said that her decision to follow Islam is not based on monetary concern and it is only because she is inspired towards the Islamic tenets.
She said that even though she started following the teachings of Islam slowly after 2010, now she decided to announce it publicly to avoid continued film offer calls and clarify some doubts of the people.
“Like many others, I was also thinking that Islam is an extremist religion. But now I found peace in Islam,” said the burkha-clad former actress fully. She also promised to announce her wedding plan soon.
Monika who has acted in 70 films including Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil and Kannada, has said she has decided to quit acting in films and will be entering wedlock soon. She had appeared as a child artiste in many including Suhasini Maniratnam's directorial venture 'Indra' and as a teenager in Thangar Bachchan's path breaking film 'Azhagi'.
Her character roles in films like Vijay's 'Bhagavathi' had made her well known among Tamil film audiences.
