Mangalore, Jan 25: For the first time, the Western Range division of Karnataka State Police will invoke provisions of the Karnataka Control of Organised Crime Act (KCOCA) against all the accused in connection with the murder case of businessman R N Naik in Ankola, Uttar Kannada district that occurred on December 21.
Speaking to reporters at a press conference here on Saturday, Inspector-General of Police (Western Range) C H Pratap Reddy said that two more persons had been arrested from Kerala in connection with the murder of R N Naik on January 12, bringing the total number of arrested to seven.
The arrested are identified as Ismail from Palakkad and Rabdin from Tamil Nadu, aides of underworld don Bannanje Raja. So far, all the seven arrested will be charged with Section 3 of the KCOCA, along with several sections of the IPC as well as Indian Arms Act, he said.
The other accused who have already been arrested are Laxman Bhajantri alias Ganesh (29) from Karkala taluk, Ambaji Bandgar alias Abhi (35) from Bangalore, Satish Patel alias Jagadish (21) from Uttar Pradesh, Achchangi Mahesh and Santhosh alias Sullia Santhu. While accused Satish Patel was arrested at the scene of the murder, the other four were arrested in Hebri on January 11.
Mr Reddy said that the seven accused had fled to different places such as Shimoga, Bangalore, Palakkad, Kottayam, Tirupathi and Varanasi following the murder of R N Naik.
The eight accused Akash alias Vivek Upadhyaya (27) from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh was shot dead at the scene of the murder by R N Naik's bodyguard Ramesh Gowda, D A R Karwar.
The Western Range special police teams, formed to investigate the murder case, seized four pistols from the accused during the course of investigation and also recovered Rs 2 lakh in cash from the possession of Akash, he said.
Mr Reddy said that further investigation in the case was on and stringent provisions of the KCOCA would be invoked during the course of investigation. A Red Corner notice has been issued all over the country for underworld don Bannanje Raja, on whose behest, the accused had carried out the murder. All the seven arrested will be booked under Section 3 of the KCOCA which is punishable with death or life imprisonment, he said.
Ramachandra Narayan Naik was shot by assailants in broad daylight near his office in Ankola on December 21. He was declared brought dead when he was taken to hospital immediately after the attack.
