Mangalore, Jan 15: “The only way societies can solve the problem of poverty is through creation of jobs, which will lead to reduction of poverty,” said executive chairman of Infosys N R Narayana Murthy.

He was speaking after inaugurating the rebuilt candle-making facility of Primacy Industries Ltd in Baikampady on the outskirts of the city on Wednesday.

The facility of the Mangalore-based candle manufacturers located in Baikampady was completely gutted in a major fire in January last year, after which it was rebuilt within a span of six months.

Commending the commitment of the company in rebuilding the facility, Mr Murthy said that it was an occasion that demonstrated the power of optimism, aspiration, courage and concern for the society. It is an extraordinary example of leadership and of not being demotivated or dispirited. It is an example for the adage 'A plausible impossibility is better than a convincing possibility', he said.

Referring to the devastating fire that destroyed the facility a year ago, he said that when an unfortunate incident had removed the hopes and confidence of low-income workers employed in the facility, it required enormous optimism, confidence and hard work to bring back their smiles. “For their concern about the 850 workers, their families and the growth of exports of this country, we must show gratitude and appreciate the dedication of the team and staff of the facility,” he lauded.

He said that it was also a lesson for those in the corporate sector that they required a large dose of optimism, courage and 'can-do' spirit to overcome the challenges they faced in their professional sphere.

“It is a great example for the workers, the society, corporate leaders, governments and the whole of India. We are importing so much more than we export, and hence, every pie counts,” he pointed.

Chairman and MD of Indian Overseas Bank M Narendra, vice-chairman of Primacy International R K Sehgal and chairman of Primacy (Mangalore unit) T Gautham Pai also spoke on the occasion.

President of Primacy (Mangalore unit) V K Talithaya welcomed the gathering.

Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao reminded that V D Savarkar was not against cow slaughter as he himself was non-veg eater, PTI reported on Thursday.

"As a Brahmin he was eating meat, and he was openly propagating eating meat," said the minister at an event in Bengaluru.

Reacting to Gundu Rao's claim, BJP MP Anurag Thakur called Congress a "factory of lies" as he warned that India won't tolerate any disrespect towards Savarkar.

"By disrespecting Veer Savarkar they have shown that they don't respect freedom fighters. During the Congress government, Sardar Bhagat Singh was termed a separatist in textbooks...By making those who want to break the nation join the congress party, Rahul Gandhi is taking forward the ideology of 'tukde tukde' and he is a 'modern Jinnah' who speaks ill of the country abroad...," he said.

Meanwhile, a court in Maharashtra's Nashik district summoned Congress MP Rahul Gandhi earlier this week in a defamation case filed against him for his alleged objectionable remarks against the Hindutva ideologue.

The complainant, who is the director of an NGO, claimed he watched a press conference addressed by Gandhi in Hingoli and also a speech made by the Congress leader in November 2022.

He alleged that Gandhi, on the two occasions, by his words and visual representations knowingly harmed the reputation of Veer Savarkar and also tried to defame the latter's image in the society.

According to the complainant, Gandhi said "Savarkar is BJP and RSS jin" which was defamatory in nature.
