Mangalore, Jan 28: The state unit of BJP on Tuesday announced that Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi would arrive in the city and address a mass convention at Nehru Maidan on February 18.
Announcing this at a press conference here, BJP state unit vice-president M B Bhanuprakash said that the party had begun making preparations and was gearing up for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The party has formed nine teams in the state for the purpose of campaigning for the elections. There will be a total of 54,686 voting booths in the state, and over 40,000 booth-level agents have been appointed by the BJP to ensure a higher voter-turnout, he said, adding that door-to-door campaigning had begun in Dakshina Kannada by party workers from January 15.
He said that the booth-level agents (BLA) assigned by the district administration in each district should also vote along with other voters. Their names should be mentioned in the voters' list at their respective booths. However, booth-level officers (BLO) have not been appointed by the district administration in most districts so far, he said.
Mr Bhanuprakash also said that the party would announce its list of candidates in the state for the upcoming elections by February 6.
In response to a question on B S Yeddyurappa contesting in the elections, he said that it would benefit the entire state if the former chief minister was willing to contest. The party also wishes him to contest this time, he added.
Speaking on the occasion, Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said that there have been continuous attempts to disrupt peace in the district from the past 3-4 months after Congress came to power. The 'goondagiri' activities are on the increase in Dakshina Kannada and the police department has failed in preventing such activities. The Congress government will be responsible if communal riots break out in the district before Lok Sabha elections, he said.
BJP district president Pratap Simha Nayak, vice-president Sulochana Bhat and others were present.
