Mangalore, Feb 6: As part of Dakshina Kannada Karavali Utsav 2014, Nethravati-Phalguni Jodukare Kambala (traditional buffalo race) organised by Dr Shivram Karanth Pilikula Nisargadhama, Mangalore will be held on February 8 at Pilikula Samskruti Grama, Moodushedde near here.
Announcing this at a press conference here on Wednesday, DK deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim said that the Kambala was being organised for the sixth year, as part of showcasing the culture of Tulunadu. It will be inaugurated on Saturday by DK district-in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai and health minister U T Khader. The inaugural ceremony will be presided by Minister for Sports and Youth Services minister K Abhayachandra Jain, he said.
The inaugural ceremony will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, and the prize distribution and stage programme will begin at 7 p.m. in the evening, he said.
Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district Kambala Samithi president Dr Jeevandhar Ballal said the Kambala would be held in six categories such as 'Hagga kiriya,' 'Hagga hiriya,' 'Kane halage,' 'Negilu hiriya,' 'Negilu kiriya' and 'Adda halage.' There will be about 90 pairs of buffaloes participating in the event. The winners of first and second places in each category will be given presented with gold coins and certificates as prizes, he said.
Mangalore South MLA J R Lobo and Dr Shivaram Karanth Biological Park director H Jayaprakash Bhandary was present.
