Mangalore, Jul 12: Congress leader Ivan D'Souza was felicitated by district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai, Mangalore South MLA J R Lobo and other party leaders on Saturday on being nominated as a Member of Legislative Council.
Speaking after the felicitation at a programme organised by National Students Union of India, Dakshina Kannada district, here on Saturday, Mr Rai said that attempts were being made to spread hatred among people by spreading false and malicious rumours, which should not be entertained.
Lauding the efforts of Ivan D'Souza for his selfless and active participation in several programmes undertaken by the party, he said that Ivan D'Souza was a leader with the will to take up a difficult task who strived to achieve it. “More number of students should be actively involved in student organisations so that they develop leadership qualities. If we are actively involved in community programmes, we can bring about a change in the society and become recognised,” he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Ivan D'Souza advocated that students should work with deliberation in student unions and organisations rather than blindly following the policies.
While lessons regarding comprehension of the democratic country and obtaining justice if wronged should be imparted in colleges itself, it is not sufficient if students learn only from textbooks. It is equally important that they have awareness and knowledge of the outside world. A choice-base system should be brought in the education sector so that students benefit more out of their education, he said.
Congress members Ibrahim Kodichal, Shashidhar Hegde, Mamatha Gatty, Mithun Rai and Ashith Pereira were present.
