New Delhi, Oct 16: Alleging that the two previous "secular" governments of Karnataka ignored a report on encroachment of Waqf Board properties, BJP MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Thursday demanded that the properties should be used for the welfare of poor Muslims.

Chandrasekhar, while briefing media at the BJP headquarters here, said that a report of Karnataka Waqf Board was submitted eight years ago and it was not placed by two consecutive "secular" governments in the Vidhan Sabha. "The previous JD(S)- Congress government, led by H D Kumaraswamy and Siddaramaiah, did not table the report. Now, the BJP government in Karnataka has placed the report in the Vidhan Sabha and I hope it will reach a conclusion," he said.

The report allegedly links several Congress politicians like like Member of Legislative Council C M Ibrahim, Rajya Sabha MP Mallikarjun Kharge, and former MP Rehman Khan to the encroachment of Waqf properties, calculating a loss of around Rs 2 lakh crore for the Board.

The report was prepared by Karnataka State Minorities Commission, headed by Anwar Manippady in 2012 when the BJP was in power.

Chandrasekhar said that while former prime minister Manmohan Singh once said the minorities of the country have the first right to the nation's wealth, he didn't see that people belonging to his party are looting them.

"The BJP has demanded that whether it's Karnataka or any part of the country, a proper investigation should be done and Waqf properties should be used for poor Muslims as it is meant for them," he said.

Sullia, Jan 18: In a shocking incident, a man shot his wife dead during a fit of rage over a minor argument and later took his own life by consuming poison. The heartbreaking event unfolded late Friday night in Kodimajalu in Sullia taluk of Dakshina Kannada.

The accused, identified as Ramachandra Gowda alias Chandra (53), used his licensed firearm to commit the crime. His wife, Vinoda (43), tragically lost her life in the incident.

On the fateful night, Ramachandra reportedly started an argument with his family after dinner over a trivial matter. The heated exchange escalated, and in a fit of uncontrollable anger, he allegedly aimed his firearm at his elder son, Prashanth. Vinoda intervened to prevent the attack, attempting to wrest the gun from Ramachandra.

However, enraged by her intervention, Ramachandra turned the gun on Vinoda and shot her, leaving her dead on the spot. Overwhelmed by the gravity of his actions, he consumed acid, commonly used for rubber processing, to end his own life.

Based on Prashanth’s statement, a case has been registered at the Sullia police station. The tragic sequence of events has left the village in shock and mourning, raising concerns about the unchecked escalation of domestic disputes.

This devastating incident underscores the importance of addressing domestic tensions before they spiral into irreversible tragedies.

Los Angeles wildfires have continued their trail of devastation, razing death tolls to 24 and destroying thousands of structures, while intensifying winds are worsening the situation for both civilians and firefighters.

In an update on Sunday evening, the County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner said a total of 24 people have died due to the wildfires.

According to the examiner, this number is only an estimate as hundreds of people in various parts of the county are still missing.

Weather forecasters in California are also warning fierce winds which fuelled the infernos around Los Angeles are expected to pick up again this week.

The notoriously dry Santa Ana winds would pick up again from Sunday night until Wednesday, reaching speeds of up to 96km/h, they said.

The most dangerous day will be Tuesday, said weather service meteorologist Rich Thompson. “You are going to have really strong gusty Santa Ana winds, a very dry atmosphere and still very dry brush, so we still have some very critical fire weather conditions out there,” he added.

On Saturday, the flames spread east, creeping closer to Interstate 405 and a busy mountain pass. This is a “significant development,” said L.A. County spokesman Jesus Ruiz.

With the fire rapidly growing and moving in the direction of “a heavily populated area … we are definitely concerned,” he continued.

Gavin Newsom, governor of California said that he believes that in terms of costs associated with the wildfire, it will be the worst natural disaster in terms scale and scope in the history of the US, and the fatalities is likely to increase significantly as well.

On Sunday, private forecaster Accuweather increased its preliminary estimate of financial losses from the blazes to between $250 billion to $275 billion. The wildfires are on track to be among the costliest in US history.
