Mangaluru, Sept 11: The script of Beary, a widely-spoken language in coastal Karnataka, was released here today by the Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy, thus earning the dialect a rare distinction of having its own and fresh script.
Releasing the script, Academy president Rahim Uchil said that Beary is mother tongue for around 20 lakh people, most of whom reside in coastal belt of Karnataka and northern coast of Kerala.
Beary has not only been a prominent language of communication in the region for centuries but it also has been a link of harmony among Tulu, Malayalam, Kannada and Konkani languages, he said.
The newly unveiled Beary script or is a phonemic abugida of 46 letters, and is written from left to right. The 46 letters include 13 swaraaksharas (vowels), 25 vargeeya vyanjanas (structured consonants) and 8 avargeeya vyanjanas (unstructured consonants).
