Chikkamagaluru, Agu 14: A day after a Muslim religious banner was discovered atop a gopura housing sage Shankaracharya’s statue Sringeri town in the district, the police have managed to nab the accused with the help of CCTV footages.
The accused has been identified as Milind son of Manohar, who is a supporter of Hindutva groups. However, the police clarified that he was not a member of any organisation.
On August 13, a tense atmosphere had prevailed in Sringeri after saffron activists gathered in large number in the town and claimed that SDPI activists desecrated the statue of Shankaracharya. They also claimed that the banner was the flag of SDPI.
Today, speaking to media persons, Chikkamagaluru police chief Hakay Akshay Machhindra rubbished the allegations of saffron activists as baseless.
“A drunker, identified as Milind son of Manohar, had picked an old banner from near the Jamia mosque in the town to sleep on the roadside on August 12th night. Later he threw the banner atop the statue of Shankaracharya and went somewhere else to sleep,” said the top cop, adding that the act was caught on CCTV camera.
