Bengaluru, Dec 9: Shivakumara Swami, the head seer of Siddaganga Mutt, Tumakuru, is recuperating at the Dr Rela Institute and Medical Centre in Chennai where he successfully underwent a liver bypass and gall bladder removal surgery yesterday.
The seer had been suffering from cholangitis, an inflammation of the bile duct, and was shifted to the institute on Friday after he again developed an infection.
“The seer withstood the surgery extremely well and was stable throughout the procedure,” Dr. Mohamed Rela told The Hindu.
A team of doctors, led by Dr. Rela, an expert in liver transplantation and hepatopancreatobiliary surgery, performed the four-hour operation. The procedure involved exploration of his bile duct, removal of multiple metal and plastic stents implanted within the bile duct, stones and debris that were an obstruction in the duct.
“A bypass between the bile duct in the liver and small intestine has been done attaching the liver directly to the small intestine. This will facilitate the liver juices to flow directly into the intestine, which was hitherto going through the stents,” the doctor explained.
“He is awake now and has fully recovered from the effects of anaesthesia. He is being closely monitored and observed in the liver intensive care unit,” the doctor said.
