Mangalore, January 22: Schools and colleges in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi remained closed in view of the bandh call given by the BJP on Saturday.
Following Deputy Director of Public Instruction C Chame Gowda had on Friday made an announcement to this effect almost all colleges and schools declared a holiday to avoid any trouble.
In several places students who had turned up at school without knowing the bandh call had to return home. Students who travel quite a distance to reach school had to commute home using auto rickshaw and also were forced to pay excessive fares.
Commissioner of Police Seemanth Kumar Singh said that elaborate arrangements have been made to avert any untoward incident.
Additional Deputy Commissioner TM Prabhakar said the district administration decided to close educational institutions across the district keeping the safety of schoolchildren in mind.
Security had been tightened across the district, he added.
