Two women in Karnataka –both Anganwadi workers – been diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) after taking the first covid vaccine dose in the month of January.
GBS is a condition in which the immune system attacks the nerves. It is triggered by an acute bacterial or viral infection.
They are currently being treated at a hospital. Officials state that they were administered the Covishield vaccine and are among the state's serious cases of Adverse Event Following Immunization (AEFI).
According to officials, the first woman aged 35, is at the Kasturba Medical Hospital in Manipal, Udupi. The other woman aged 45, is being treated at Bengaluru's NIMHANS (National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences).
While the first woman suffered from weakness in the hands and legs, the second woman had pain in the lower limbs.
According to doctors in NIMHAMS, it is not easy to predict which person will develop GBS after vaccination.
