Udupi, February 8: Former Udupi MLA UR Sabhapathi, who has been inactive in Congress since the last Assembly elections, is all set to join JD(S).
Sabhapathi has called a meeting of his followers on Wednesday in Udupi and is likely to announce his decision to join JD(S) on February 18, at Bangalore, in the presence of former Chief Ministers HD Kumar Swamy and S Bangarappa.
He also has a plans to hold a mega rally in the district in a few days after joining JD(S).
Sabhapathi told press persons that Kumaraswamy during his visit to Kollur recently had telephoned him and invited him to the party fold and to be active in politics. Sabhapathi also said that Congress in the district was no more alive.
Political analysts feel Sabhapathi's move to join JD(S), will further weaken the Congress in Udupi by splitting secular votes and thereby help BJP gain an absolute upper hand.
The move is gaining pace as the BJP preparing for an early Assembly elections.
Sabhapathi has been a party-hopper during his political career and was also associated with Bangarappa's erstwhile outfit Karnataka Congress Party (KCP).
