Manipal, February 12: Minister for Environment and Ports Krishna Palemar on Friday directed the Environment Department to issue a notice to Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) on the fly ash issue.

Mr. Palemar told presspersons that the Government did not want any industry which caused pollution. “We will be merciless in dealing with industries causing pollution. Officers of the Environment Department should not give in to any pressure,” he said.

Mr. Palemar said that he would shortly visit the site where the UPCL had located its ash ponds at Santhur village in Udupi district.

“I will personally inspect the spot,” he said. “There are 48,000 industries in the State. We even have instruments to measure air pollution in the villages,” Mr. Palemar said.

Bhaskar of the Environment Department said that the UPCL should dispose of wet fly ash at its ash pond. He had visited the pond of UPCL, he added.
