Fire at fitness centre causes huge losses

Mangalore, February 12: A fire broke out at a fitness centre on the third floor of Sudheendra Super Market Complex building at PVS Circle in the city on Friday.


The fire broke out around 2.30 p.m.

According to sources, a portion of the roof of the building and equipment at the centre had been destroyed.


The owner of the Gym Vijayendra Bhat said that the loss was estimated at Rs 35 lakhs.

Regional Fire Officer C. Basavanna said that nobody was injured in the incident. Short circuit in an air conditioner is said to be the reason for the fire, he said.


Fire service personnel were able to extinguish it within 15 minutes.

Chief Fire Officer Varadarajan said the public made umpteen calls after they saw the fire from the buildings nearby. Two fire tenders were pressed into service.

ACP Ravindra Gadadi, Bunder Police Inspector Vinay Gaonkar, Kadri Police Inspector Chikkaswamy, Bunder PSI Manjunath and police personnel were rushed to the spot.

Ramanagara, Sep 19: A case of rape, sexual harassment and criminal intimidation has been registered against BJP MLA Munirathna and six others, police said on Thursday.

It was registered following the complaint of a 40-year-old woman who alleged that the incident took place at a private resort within the Kaggalipura police station’s jurisdiction.

“We received a complaint on Wednesday night and based on it, we have registered case against seven people, including the BJP MLA under various sections for rape by public servant, sexual harassment, criminal intimidation, criminal conspiracy, voyeurism, intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, Information Technology Act, and others,” a senior police officer said.

The matter is being investigated, he said.

The fresh FIR against the BJP MLA, also a former Minister, comes days after he was arrested by the Bengaluru Police in connection with the two cases filed against him for alleged harassment, threats and casteist abuse, police said.
