Udupi, February 13: Former judge of Karnataka High Court M.F. Saldanha said on Saturday that the final report of the Justice B.K. Somasekhara Commission, which went into the church attacks in the State in September 2008, “has buried the truth and is a bundle of falsehoods”.

He was speaking at a public meeting against the Somasekhara Panel's Report organised by the Udupi branch of International Federation of Karnataka Christian Associations and Bharatiya Christa Okkoota, near the Deputy Commissioner Office here.

Mr. Saldanha said the police had colluded with the elements of Bajrang Dal in the church attacks. The then Home Minister V.S. Acharya could not escape the responsibility for these attacks. A nun had lost her eye in the attack.

He had conducted a People's Tribunal Enquiry and had gone into all the facts about the church attacks. He would submit his report to the President of India Pratibha Patil in New Delhi on February 14.

Though the Somasekhara panel blamed the saffron groups in its interim report, the findings of the final report contradicted those of the former. “Unless the guilty are punished, they will feel encouraged,” Mr. Saldanha said.

The former Chairman of Legislative Council David Simeon said the attacks on religious minorities in the State began within six months of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) coming to power in the State. The BJP was raising the bogey of conversion for its own selfish ends.

Recently a large number of Dalits had been converted to Buddhism in Gulbarga. Did the Government arrest them? It was incumbent upon leaders of all political parties to condemn such attacks, Mr. Simeon said.

General secretary of State unit of Karnataka Komu Sauharda Vedike (KKSV) K.L. Ashok said the Somasekhara Panel's report was fit to be consigned to the dust bin. The Report was tailor-made to save the BJP Government from any embarrassment. “If conversions had to be stopped, why was the Pejawar seer visiting Dalit colonies? Any attack on Muslims or Christians is an attack on democracy and secular fabric of the nation,” he said.

The meeting passed six resolutions. The CBI should be asked to probe the church attacks. Continuous protection should be given to places of worship belonging to minority communities. Proper compensation should be given to the places of worship and individuals during the attacks. Organisations and individuals responsible for the attacks should be punished. Cases slapped against innocent youth should be withdrawn.

Episcopal Vicar of Udupi district Baptist Menezes, Area Chairman of Karnataka Southern Diocese Edward Karkada, president of Udupi district unit of KKSV G. Rajashekhar, president of Catholic Sabha, Mangalore, Walter Pinto, president of District Minorities Forum Khatib Rashid, president of Udupi Muslim Okkoota M.P. Moideenabba, Secretary of Popular Front of India Rafiq Majur, president of DSS Udupi unit Shekhar Hejmady were present.

Bengaluru, Nov 22: For the second day running, the Karnataka BJP on Friday staged a statewide protest condemning the government’s alleged move to notify land of farmers as Waqf property.

The BJP staged a protest before the offices of Deputy Commissioners at district headquarters.

The BJP leaders are vehemently demanding that the state government cancel a 1974 Gazette notification in this regard.

The agitators are also demanding scrapping of the Waqf Board and the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Minister for Waqf and Housing Zameer Ahmad Khan.

The BJP MLAs, MLCs, MPs gathered in the premises of Freedom Park and staged a protest under the leadership of Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka and slammed the state government.

MLA T.S. Srivatsa led the protest in Mysuru and hundreds of party workers and farmers staged the protest under the leadership of former MP Pratap Simha in Kodagu.

Former MP Sumalatha Ambareesh led the agitation in Mandya.

This was the first time that Sumalatha took part in the party’s programme after the Lok Sabha elections.

State President B.Y. Vijayendra claimed, “The Congress government in Karnataka is issuing notices to farmers claiming the ownership of their lands to the Waqf Board and pushing them on the streets overnight.”

In the first week of December, three teams formed by the BJP will travel across the state and record the grievances of farmers.

“The state government is attempting to snatch away the lands belonging to temples as well,” Vijayendra alleged and added that the teams would comprise all senior leaders of the BJP.

Meanwhile, the police have taken Sri Ram Sena chief Pramod Muthalik into custody while staging a protest march to the office of Zameer Ahmad Khan in Bengaluru.

Muthalik along with Hindutva activists was planning to lay siege to Zameer’s office over the Waqf row.

The police stopped Muthalik and requested him to submit the memorandum by reaching the minister’s office in a vehicle. However, Muthalik refused to go with the police and continued his footmarch. The police took him into custody following arguments.

Mangaluru: A heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded in the quiet Bellayuru village on the outskirts of Mangaluru as a man’s life ended on a railway track following an apparent double murder. Authorities from the Mulki police station identified the man as Karthik Bhat, 32, whose lifeless body was discovered on the tracks with his head positioned on the rail, indicating a tragic suicide.

Nearby, police recovered keys to a scooter and a house, which eventually led them to uncover a series of chilling events. Following the trail, officers located Bhat’s scooter parked near Mahammayi Temple. Inside the vehicle, they found documents confirming his identity, including an RC, insurance papers, and his driving license.

Their search continued to Bhat's home in Pakshikere, Kemral village, where they discovered a locked room. With the keys retrieved from the tracks, police unlocked the door, only to be confronted by a horrifying sight. The bodies of Priyanka (28) and her young son Hriday (4) lay in a pool of blood, pointing to a brutal murder that occurred just hours before Bhat’s suicide.

Initial investigations suggest Bhat, beleaguered by ongoing family disputes, committed the murders of his wife and son on the evening of November 8 before tragically ending his own life. A death note found in his diary hinted at his mental state and tragic intentions.

Priyanka’s family, residing in Shivamogga, was informed of the incident. The couple, married for six years, now leaves behind grieving relatives and unanswered questions. Police have initiated formal proceedings, collecting statements from family members as they continue their investigation into the tragic sequence of events.

The Karnataka Police’s Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) achieved a major breakthrough on Monday night by eliminating Vikram Gowda, one of Karnataka’s most wanted Naxal leaders for over two decades. The encounter occurred in the dense Kabbinale forest of Udupi district, marking a significant victory against Naxal insurgency in the region.

Who Was Vikram Gowda?

Hailing from Hebri in Udupi, Vikram Gowda, 44, was a prominent figure in the Naxal movement. He went underground in 2002, initially serving as a courier and fund collector before rising to lead a breakaway Naxal group. Despite having only a fourth-grade education, he was a staunch advocate for tribal rights and a key player in the movement’s survival in Karnataka.

Bounty: ₹3 lakh from Karnataka and ₹50,000 from Kerala.

Legacy: The last major Naxal leader in Karnataka after the 2021 arrest of B G Krishnamurthy.

The Encounter

Police revealed that Gowda and his team visited Kabbinale village to collect groceries on Monday night. Acting on a tip-off, ANF ambushed the group. When the Naxals opened fire, ANF responded, leading to Gowda's death.

Escapees: Three Naxals fled, including prominent members Latha (aka Mundgaru Latha) and Raju.

Significance: This was the first Naxal casualty in Karnataka in over two decades.

Home Minister G. Parameshwara confirmed the operation, stating, “Gowda was elusive for 20 years, escaping multiple encounters. His death is a critical step in dismantling Naxal operations in the region.”

The Decline of Naxal Activity in Karnataka

Karnataka's Naxal movement has been dwindling, with members seeking refuge in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The group’s strength had reduced to just 19 members by 2018, but recent sightings indicate attempts at revival:

2023 Activity: Reports of Gowda-led movements in the Kodagu and Hassan districts reignited concerns.

Political Heat: The BJP criticised the Congress government, alleging it created a “safe haven” for Naxals.

A Glimpse into Gowda’s Past

Personal Life: Gowda’s ex-wife, Savitri (alias Rajita), was arrested in 2021. She was a senior Naxal commander involved in insurgency since 2004.
Rehabilitation Efforts: Since 2013, Karnataka’s rehabilitation policy has seen 14 Naxals surrender and reintegrate into mainstream society.

A Milestone in Karnataka’s Fight Against Insurgency

The operation signifies a decisive blow to Naxal resurgence in the Western Ghats. While the ANF continues its search for escapees, the Karnataka government reaffirmed its commitment to offering rehabilitation to those willing to surrender.

As Karnataka celebrates this triumph, the message is clear: there is no room for insurgency in the state.
