Kasaragod, February 15: As many as 22 remand prisoners of the sub jail here were sent to the Kannur Central jail following violence in the jail by a section of prisoners.
The jail authorities sent the remand prisoners to the Kannur central jail following a probe into the seizure of a mobile phone and a packet of ganja from a prisoner and the attack on the jail staff in protest against the action.
The mobile phone and ganja were seized from Siddique, an accused in a theft case. When he was being bodily examined, he complained of chest pain and the authorities admitted him to the prison ward of the general hospital.
When Siddique was brought back to the prison, his co prisoners threw food plates on the jail staff and abused them.
Meanwhile, the jail staff said that the sub jail was facing acute staff shortage and it was highly congested.
The sub jail is headed by a superintendent, three head wardens and eight wardens and out of which two wardens are on leave. According to staff norms, the sub jail should have a warden for every six prisoners and three wardens should have a head warden.
