Mangalore, February 15: Over three dozen Gram Panchayat workers staged a protest in front of the Zilla Panchayat office near Urwa Store on Tuesday demanding resolution of their long-pending problems related to wages, dearness allowance and working conditions.
The protest was staged as part of the Zilla Panchayat Chalo organized across the state. The protesters warned the government that they would start an indefinite hunger strike if their demands were not met.
The promotion percentage of bill collectors has been increased from 40 per cent to 70 per cent. But the seniority criterion has not been followed in the promotions. The government should amend the order to ensure that seniority was also factored in while carrying out promotions, Mr Yadav Shetty, the president of the DK District Gram Panchayat Workers Association, said.
Mr Shetty also urged the government to pay the dearness allowance arrears in lump sum instead of tagging it with monthly salary.
The minimum wages has been decreased from Rs 5799 to Rs 4999 considering the ZP workers' job as semi-skilled. The government should withdraw the order immediately, he added.
