Mangalore, February 18: Gold and silver pooja items of Mudra Mahalingeshwara temple at Inna village, 35 km away from Udupi, were stolen in the wee hours of Thursday.
The five doors of the temple were found broken open by the temple priest who came at 4.30am for the morning pooja.
The main items found missing were the golden face, kaldeepas, prabahavali and other silver items which is estimated at Rs 2 lakh. The Kaup police inspector is investigating the case.
Udupi DySP Jayanth Shetty who visited the temple said that the watchmen of the temple did not hear any sounds upto 1am, which points to the fact that the theft occurred between 1am and 4.30am.
The temple has a CCTV and burglar alarm. The burglar alarm which signals the entry of a stranger/outsider after the stipulated working time in the sanctrum and sanctorum also simaltaneously gives calls to four mobile numbers of important persons of the temple. This system failed on Thursday.
The temple which was managed by a trustee board is now being managed by the executive officer of the muzrai department.
