Authorities remain mute as people dump waste at prohibited area

March 16, 2011
Mangalore, March 16: The Ullal Town Municipal Council (UTMC) has been a mute spectator to the heaps of trash that surround the two helpless signboards displayed on the road near the Ullal beach by the erstwhile Ullal Town Panchayat, warning people not to dump waste on the 100-metre road stretch.

Although, the Town Panchayat has now transformed into Municipal Council, the UTMC is neither bothered to replace the boards (which are blurred and almost about to crumble), nor has it taken any effective measure to prevent the violation of law and stop the law breakers from dumping loads of construction wastes within a few metres away from high tide line.

The Coastal Regulatory Zone has banned dumping of construction waste within 500 meters.

Unfortunately, officials have already come to a conclusion that they cannot do much other than filing a complaint with the police!
BC Sadananda, the chief officer of UTMC, has admitted that the place where the waste is being dumped was within 500 metres from high tide line. It is too difficult to prevent people from dumping waste here as they do so during night, says Sadananda.
“We have filed complaints with the police. Some people have also suggested engaging personnel to watch the dumping activity and take action. But the Council is yet to decide on it” Sadanada said.

Nagappa, an elderly fisherman, who lives near the site, says that dumping of waste has been continuing unabated for several years.
Umavathi, a representative of the Meenugara Mahila Hitarakshana Samiti, said a majority of the construction waste that was dumped was from neighbouring areas. The dumping of waste had caused problems, including defacing of the road. “The only relief is that kitchen waste from houses is not dumped here. If dumped, the municipality regularly clears it,” she said.

Sadananda said the construction waste came from neighbouring places such as Someshwara and Kotekar which do not have dumping yards. “We also do not have places where the dumped material can be moved,” he said.

Rohini, a fisherwoman, complained about the hazards faced because of the discharge of effluents from some of the fishmeal and fish oil industries located off the beach. “You cannot stand even for a minute at this spot. Those engaged in drying fish on the beach are more prone to infections,” she said.

Sadananada said work was on to construct three effluent treatment plants near the industries which would be functional in six months. “The industries then have to pass the effluents through the plants,” he said.

Bengaluru: The Prime Minister Narendra Modi led union government has requested the Karnataka High Court to direct the Mandya district administration and the state government to clear a madrasa operating within the premises of the historic Jama Masjid in Srirangapatna.

The Waqf Board, opposing this move, has claimed the mosque as its property and defended the right to conduct madrasa activities there.

The matter was brought before a division bench headed by Chief Justice N V Anjaria following a public interest litigation filed by a person named Abhishek Gowda from Kabbalu village in Kanakapura taluk. The petition alleged “unauthorised madrasa activities” within the mosque.

Representing the Central government, Additional Solicitor General of India for High Court of Karnataka, K Arvind Kamath argued that the Jama Masjid was designated as a protected monument in 1951, yet unauthorised madrasa operations continue there.

He noted that concerns over potential law and order issues have so far prevented any intervention. Kamath urged the court to direct the Mandya district administration to take action and vacate the madrasa from the mosque.

In defence, lawyers for the state government and the Waqf Board contested this request, stating that the Waqf Board had been recognised as the owner of the property since 1963 and, thus, conducting madrasa activities there is lawful.

After hearing both sides, the bench adjourned the case for further arguments, scheduling the next hearing for November 20.

Mysuru, Nov 12: Zameer Ahmad Khan, the Tourism and Waqf minister of Karnataka, who stirred a controversy by addressing the Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy as ‘Kaala Kumaraswamy’ has tendered apologies for his remarks.

Speaking to reporters in Mysuru on Tuesday, Minister Zameer stated that he will apologise if remarks have hurt JD-S workers.

“We both are very close. Then, in a total of 24 hours, we were together for 14 hours. He used to fondly address me as “kulla” (shorty) and I used to address him as “kariyanna” (blacky, kaalia),” Minister Zameer stated.

“I am not addressing him as ‘kaalia’ for the first time. I have not said something highly derogatory. It is being made as big in the backdrop of elections. With love, he used to call me a shorty and I called him a blacky. If I had caused pain to anyone by my words I apologise,” he said.

He further stated: “Kumaraswamy had said that he didn’t want the votes of the Muslim community. But now they are attempting to purchase Muslim votes. Against this backdrop, I have made the remark.”

Minister for Home G. Parameshwara stated on Tuesday, “Minister Zameer and Kumaraswamy are close friends. Their comments against each other are not significant.”

Zameer Ahmad Khan, the Tourism and Waqf minister of Karnataka stirred a controversy on Monday as he addressed the Union Minister as ‘Kaala Kumaraswamy’.

JD-S on Tuesday demanded a public apology and resignation of Minister for Waqf and Tourism Zameer Ahmad Khan over his ‘racist’ remarks.

“Remember, there is no place here for your divisive policies. You have insulted the people by making ethnic, racist and discriminatory statements. You should apologize to the people of the state and resign,” the JD (S) demanded in the post.

Union Parliamentary Affairs and Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju reacted sternly to the racist jibe and stated, “I strongly deplore Congress Minister Zameer Ahmed calling Union Minister and former Chief Minister of Karnataka Kumaraswamy as 'Kaalia Kumaraswamy'.

Mangaluru: A heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded in the quiet Bellayuru village on the outskirts of Mangaluru as a man’s life ended on a railway track following an apparent double murder. Authorities from the Mulki police station identified the man as Karthik Bhat, 32, whose lifeless body was discovered on the tracks with his head positioned on the rail, indicating a tragic suicide.

Nearby, police recovered keys to a scooter and a house, which eventually led them to uncover a series of chilling events. Following the trail, officers located Bhat’s scooter parked near Mahammayi Temple. Inside the vehicle, they found documents confirming his identity, including an RC, insurance papers, and his driving license.

Their search continued to Bhat's home in Pakshikere, Kemral village, where they discovered a locked room. With the keys retrieved from the tracks, police unlocked the door, only to be confronted by a horrifying sight. The bodies of Priyanka (28) and her young son Hriday (4) lay in a pool of blood, pointing to a brutal murder that occurred just hours before Bhat’s suicide.

Initial investigations suggest Bhat, beleaguered by ongoing family disputes, committed the murders of his wife and son on the evening of November 8 before tragically ending his own life. A death note found in his diary hinted at his mental state and tragic intentions.

Priyanka’s family, residing in Shivamogga, was informed of the incident. The couple, married for six years, now leaves behind grieving relatives and unanswered questions. Police have initiated formal proceedings, collecting statements from family members as they continue their investigation into the tragic sequence of events.
