February 25, 2011

Mangalore, Febryary 25: Dix Group DKCA Mangalore Warriors thrashed Coastaldigest Chris Cairns XI by 83 runs in a charity T20 match at the NMPT Cricket Stadium here on Friday, February 25.

Powered with Ashreen's scintillating 96, Dix Group DKCA Mangalore Warriors posted a massive total of 262 runs on the board, losing only three wickets in the process. On a mat wicket with the ball hardly doing anything both in terms of spin and swing, the clueless bowlers of Coastaldigest Chris Cairns XI were smashed to all sides of the park in the allotted 20 overs. Nihal (79), Nithish Raj (29), and skipper Daniel Sequiera (31) too joined the party, making sure that they keep Coastaldigest Chris Cairns XI fielders chasing leather all the time. Nihal in particular took the attack to the men in red and smashed four consecutive sixes in one particular over towards the end of the innings.

In reply, Coastaldigest Chris Cairns XI set off to a defensive start, going at a relatively low pace considering the total they had to chase. The batsmen failed to come to terms with the conditions and Dix Group DKCA Mangalore Warriors' bowling attack, and lost wickets at the top. The star of the event, Chris Cairns, then came out to bat and gave the crowd a lot to cheer about with some lusty hits either side of the wicket. After scoring a well made 69, Cairns got out, eliminating any hopes of Coastaldigest Chris Cairns XI winning the game. In all, Coastaldigest Chris Cairns XI could only manage 179 in their allotted 20 overs for the loss of 6 wickets with contributions from Nathan Ashley (51) and Marc Archer (44), besides Cairns.

Ashreen was adjudged Man of the Match for his match winning knock of 96.

Sanjay Rao, Managing Director, Maruti Suzuki Mandovi, Mangalore, Dr Shrikanth Rai, President, Dakshina Kannada Cricket Association, Dr M R Shetty, Secretary and Executive Officer of Dr M V Shetty Memorial Trust, Arjun Pinto, President of Round Table, Muhammad Sharief, Administrative Manager of Coastaldigest.com and Joseph Rego, Head of the Chris Cairns Foundation, were present at the presentation ceremony.

Speaking after losing the match, Chris Cairns said that the Mangalore team played better than what they had expected. “Their standard of play was a lot better. We gave away too many runs. They were the better team”, Cairns said, congratulating the local team for the victory.

Winning captain Daniel Sequiera said that the event was a good opportunity to showcase their abilities and that they look to make the most of such opportunities whenever they get them. He also said that his team had not quite expected that they will win in such a fashion especially with a player of Cairns' caliber in the opposition camp. “Until he (Cairns) was there at the crease, I was not quite sure. When he got out, I was content”, Sequeira said.

Man of the match Ashreen said that playing against cricketers of international stature, was a good experience for the local team.

Muhammad Sharief presented Marc Archer of Coastaldigest Chris Cairns XI with the Best Batsman award while Dr Shrikanth Rai and Arjun Pinto jointly presented the Best Bowler award to Daniel Sequiera of Dix Group DKCA Mangalore Warriors. Sanjay Rao gave away the Maruti Suzuki Chris Cairns T20 Cricket Trophy to the winning team.

The ball used in the game as well as the cricket kits used by Chris Cairns' team were presented to DKCA on the occasion.

Prior to the match Chris Cairns gave some useful cricket tips to children at a short coaching session.

Mangaluru, Dec 16: A tragic incident unfolded at Someshwara beach on Monday when a woman, participating in the Pinda Pradhana ritual for her late brother-in-law, lost her life after drowning.

The deceased, Usha (72), was the wife of the late Jagadish Bhandary from Derebail. She had traveled to Someshwara with her relatives to perform the ritual for her brother-in-law, Karunakar Bhandary, who had passed away recently.

After completing the ceremony, Usha and her relatives went for a sea bath as part of the rites. Tragically, Usha slipped and was swept away by the strong waves. Though her relatives cried out for help, locals who rushed into the sea could only retrieve her lifeless body. She was declared dead when brought to shore.

Usha had retired after a 40-year career as an assistant secretary at the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA). She is survived by her daughter.

The body has been sent to K S Hegde Hospital in Deralakatte for postmortem, and a case has been registered at the Ullal police station.

Bengaluru: Police Inspector of Khanapur station has been suspended for dereliction of duty by allegedly letting in political leaders and others inside the station while BJP MLC C T Ravi was in custody in connection with a case registered against him, officials said on Wednesday.

The suspension order was issued by the office of Inspector General of Police, North Zone, Belagavi on December 21, they said.

On December 19, Ravi was arrested by the police from the premises of Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi for allegedly using a derogatory word against Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar in the legislative council hall.

According to the official order, when C T Ravi was taken to Khanapura police station for safety reasons, Police Inspector Manjunath Nayak, who was in-charge of the station, was told to use the staff and assign suitable duties to them.

It was also ordered to block the entry of any person other than the accused inside the police station. However, many political leaders and mediapersons stormed inside the police station. This created a noisy atmosphere inside the station, it stated.

The order further stated that as a responsible police inspector grade officer, Nayak failed to prevent several political leaders from entering Khanapur Police station, thus creating a tumultuous atmosphere.

He violated the order of superiors, showed negligence and carelessness while performing duty. Therefore, a departmental inquiry was initiated and Nayak was suspended from service with immediate effect for dereliction of duty, the order stated.

According to a police statement issued on Wednesday, after registration of case under section 75 (sexual harassment) and 79 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in Hirebagewadi police station here, Ravi was taken into custody and handed over to the investigating officers.

However, Ravi was shifted to Khanapura police station considering the security aspect and the huge crowd gathered near Hirebagewadi police station.

"A large number of mediapersons, supporters and party workers gathered and created a chaotic atmosphere in Khanapura police station. There was also the possibility of additional supporters and Congress workers arriving. All these factors also had the potential to disrupt public order," the police stated.

Keeping in mind Ravi's safety, he was shifted to Ramadurga, it said.

Bengaluru: In response to the rising number of Caesarean deliveries in Karnataka, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dinesh Gundu Rao, announced on Monday that the state government would introduce a dedicated programme next month to address this issue.

Replying to MLC Jagadev Guthedar's question in the Legislative Council, the minister revealed that Caesarean deliveries now account for 46% of total births in the state. He noted that private hospitals conduct 61% of these procedures, while government hospitals perform 36%.

The minister emphasized the necessity of preventing unnecessary Caesarean deliveries. He highlighted that some private hospitals perform Caesarean sections in 80% to 90% of cases primarily for financial gain, finding it easier compared to normal deliveries. To counteract this, the Health Department plans to launch a separate programme in January aimed at reducing such procedures.

Gundu Rao underscored the importance of mentally preparing pregnant women for normal deliveries. "We are already conducting an audit of Caesarean deliveries at every hospital to understand the necessity and rationale behind the doctors' decisions," he added.

Additionally, the minister mentioned the government's intention to provide round-the-clock maternity services at taluk hospitals to further discourage unnecessary Caesarean deliveries.

Regarding foeticide cases, the minister informed the House that in 2023-24 and 2024-25, 45 individuals were arrested for violating the Pre-conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques Act. Cases were registered in Belagavi, Kolar, Mandya, and Bengaluru Rural.
