Mangalore, February 26: As part of its anniversary celebrations, the Indian Coast Guard held a demonstration of sea rescue operations on Saturday, February 26 here.
Various acts of rescue work carried out by the Coast Guard forces such as rescuing of stranded fishermen, drowning rescue work, catching sea thieves etc were displayed besides several other demonstrations.
Two ships namely 'Samrat' and 'Savithribai Phule' were used for the purpose.
Speaking to media persons on the occasion P S Jha, Commandant of Karnataka Coast Guard, said that the Coast Guards not only rescues people and ships stranded in the seas, but also keeps a check on pirates and sea thieves. He also revealed that a request has been made to the authorities of Mangalore Airport seeking permission to use the Aiport as an air base for the planes and helicopters of the Coast Guard so that swift rescue work is carried out in times of emergency.
Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, Deputy Commissioner Subhod Yadav, SP Dr A Subhramanyeshwara Rao were among those who witnessed the demonstrations.
