Mangalore, February 27: Cutting across party lines, members of the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat on Saturday took the officials to task for not doing enough to tackle the drinking water scarcity in many gram panchayats. This was the first meeting of the newly-elected members of the zilla panchayat.
The members said people were facing the problem even before the onset of summer. If steps were not taken to tackle the problem permanently, people would start staging agitations in front of their (members') residences, they said.
Ramanath Rai, MLA, said except in Kinnigoli gram panchayat, no work under the multi-village scheme to provide basic amenities, had been carried out in the district.
Chief Executive Officer P. Shivashankar said the water available at present could meet the needs of 37 lakh people. There were 1,200 piped water supply lines, 983 mini water supply schemes and 5,700 hand pumps in the district. Supply of water had been affected in some areas because of leaks. Mr. Shivashankar said a survey was on to identify the points of leak. Steps would be taken to plug the leaks. A State-level survey of drinking water sources was on, he pointed. The members raised the problems faced by anganwadi workers.
