Mangalore, February 27: The wind of revolution currently blowing in the countries of the Middle East and North Africa should also reach this part of the world to bring a change in the Indian social, political and economic system, said Prof P Koya, Chief Editor of 'Thejas' a Kerala based Malayalam daily.

He was addressing thousands of students who converged at Nehru Maidan on Sunday evening as part of the first ever Karnataka state conference of Campus Front of India. The conference was held under the promulgation of 'Students for Social Change'.

Koya said the people of Egypt have set an example for the entire world by their undaunted and successful struggle against corruption and dictatorship, which culminated in the overthrowing of one of the cruelest dictators of the contemporary world.

Being a suppressed section, the middle class people of this community including students should be inspired by those hundreds of thousands of Egyptian people, who had converged at Tahrir Square in Cairo for three weeks with a determination to change the fate of their country, he said, adding that “it is possible for us too to achieve our goal if we struggle together for the cause of social change.”

A Mohammed Yusuf, President of Campus Front of India, stated that the process of social change must be initiated from campuses. “Let us resolve to bring a change in our system by eradicating communalism and fascism from this country and our struggle against these evil powers should begin from campuses,” he said.

Yusuf said that due to the inactiveness of good people, fascist groups have doubled their strength. “Sadly, Sangh Parivar and its student organisation ABVP, are a major barrier for social change in the nation”, he said adding that campuses in India should be liberated from the clutches of 'communal and fascist forces'.

Shivsunder, writer and activist, called upon the students to give more emphasis to social activities and become catalysts of social change.

It is unfortunate that students are losing enthusiasm in activities and are engaged only in studies because of the competition in the job market, he pointed out.

The nation becomes independent only when equal powers are given to the poor and farmers, he said. “The gap between the poor and the rich has been increasing considerably after independence. The ratio of wealth of the poor and the rich was 1:50 in the pre-Indpendence period and now, it has been changed to 1:3,000 at present,” he added.

No initiatives are being taken even as the number of atrocities against women, Dalits and minorities are increasing, he said.

Abdul Salam Puthige, Editor in Chief of Vartha Bharati Kannada daily, said all sorts and colours of communalism pose equal threat to the society.

Calling upon the students to join hands to ward off the evil of communalism from the society, Puthige said, those students who engage in activities with an objective of bringing reformation in the society along with their studies, are commendable.

Pattabhirama Somayaji, activist, KM Shareef, General Secretary, PFI, Anis Ahmed, Chairman, National Advisory Council, CFI and Majeed Kodlipet, President, SDPI, Karnataka were among those present.

Mangaluru: Six youths including teenagers have been arrested by the Bantwal Rural Police in connection with a brutal assault on 21-year-old Aboobakar (name changed to hide identity), an incident that was widely shared on social media after footage revealed the victim tied to a pole and violently beaten.

The arrested individuals, all from Kanchinadkapadavu, Sajipanadu village in Ullal Taluk, have been identified as Mohammad Sapwan (25), Mohammad Rizwan (25), Irfan (27), Anis Ahmad (19), Nasir (27), and Shakeer (18). According to police reports, the assault took place on November 7 in Kanchinadkapadavu.

The sequence of events began when Aboobakar was reportedly called to a residence in Kanchinadkapadavu by a female relative. Upon his arrival, he was confronted by the accused, who questioned his presence, tied him to a pole with ropes, and attacked him while he was shirtless.

Aboobakar managed to file a police complaint the following day, detailing the assault. As his injuries worsened, he was admitted to a private hospital in Mangaluru.

While in the hospital, Aboobakar alleged that his attackers intended to kill him during the assault. This statement led to additional charges of attempted murder being filed.

Police officials stated that the suspects were subsequently apprehended, charged with group assault and attempted murder, and placed in judicial custody. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are awaited.

Mangaluru: A tragic accident took place on Saturday at Chembugudde near Thokkottu, claiming the life of a 47-year-old woman after a tanker lorry ran over her. The victim, identified as Rahmat H Rashid, was riding pillion with her husband, Abdul Rashid G, on their scooter.

The couple was traveling from Yenepoya Hospital to Bajpe when the scooter skidded on the poorly maintained road. Rahmat fell onto the road and was fatally struck by a tanker lorry that was coming from behind. Despite being rushed to the hospital, doctors declared her dead upon arrival.

The incident prompted a swift response from the DYFI Ullal Taluk Committee, which staged a protest on Saturday night, condemning the unsafe condition of the road. Nithin Kuthar, president of the committee, criticized MLA and Legislative Assembly Speaker UT Khader for failing to ensure safe infrastructure, despite touting the road as toll-free.

Kuthar demanded immediate repairs, warning that the committee would march to the MLA’s office with black flags if the road is not fixed within a week.

Former DYFI State President Sunil Kumar Bajal also voiced frustration over the deteriorating condition of Thokkottu market, highlighting the struggles people face while crossing roads riddled with dangerous potholes. In response to public outcry, temporary repairs were made to the road at Chembugudde on Sunday, though locals remain wary and demand a more permanent solution.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has warned that disciplinary action will be taken against those officials who change the land mutation records and serve eviction notices to farmers under the Waqf Act.

In a letter, the Revenue Department Principal Secretary Rajender Kumar Kataria reminded all regional commissioners and deputy commissioners in the districts that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recently had a meeting following complaints about certain land properties being made in favour of the Karnataka Board of Waqfs.

In the meeting it was decided that all the directions issued previously by any government office or authority to change the mutation records has been withdrawn, the letter said.

It added that all the notices served in the past have also been withdrawn and no action should be taken against the farmers who are cultivating on the said land.

On the directions of the chief minister, the previous letters and the latest reminders served on November 7 to the farmers and land owners have been withdraw, the letter said.

"The officials who served reminder-2 despite the chief minister's direction will face appropriate disciplinary action," Kataria said in his letter.

He said he has been instructed to strictly implement the chief minister's direction.

The fresh direction was issued in poll-bound Karnataka, where bypolls to three crucial assembly segments are due on November 13.

Some farmers in Honwad village in Vijayapura in north Karnataka had alleged last month that they were served eviction notices as the Waqf Board claimed rights over it.

Subsequently, complaints started in pouring in from some other parts of the state.

BJP leader Tejasvi Surya on October 25 alleged that Karnataka Waqf Minister B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan directed the deputy commissioners and revenue officials to register lands in favour of the Waqf Board within 15 days, which resulted in confusion.

On Surya's request, the Chairman of the Joint Committee of Parliament on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, Jagdambika Pal visited Karnataka on November 7 and met farmers in Hubballi, Vijayapura and Belagavi districts who had alleged that their lands were marked as Waqf properties.
