UPCL rubbishes claims of fly-ash disposal

Mangalore, February 28: Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL), reiterating its claim as one of the best environment-friendly power plants in India has allayed fears raised regarding fly ash in ash pond area and sea water leakages in the pipelines.
In a press release Kishore Alva, vice-president, corporate affairs, UPCL, claims that the plant has been commissioned and is in operation well within the stipulated environmental norms. This plant has invested for special environmental protection infrastructures like 275 mtr flue stacks.
The fly ash is taken in its dry form to the ash pond in closed bulkers and disposed at ash pond in concentrated slurry form. The bottom ash is taken out in water impounded hopper and disposed in wet form after dewatering in open trucks to ash pond and dumped. There is always water in the ash pond and excess water from the pond during monsoon shall be recycled to the main plant and is used for other purposes after treatment, the press release states.
Also UPCL has built an ash pond to dump the ash in slurry form, in emergency condition during initial period of operation. Further, alternative use of ash utilization is also explored with prospective customers.
The water in the ash pond has dried up. UPCL has rectified this issue and ash is now being discharged in concentrated slurry form and water is filled in the ash pond. At present there is no fugitive emission from the ash pond. Further no public road exists on the ash pond dyke as projected in the media and the entire corridor and ash pond is a protected area, the statement adds. No ash is being dumped to sea, as apprehended by some people.
Alva has added UPCL has also invested for special environmental protection infrastructure like a 275-mtr flue stack, FGD (Flue gas desulpurisation), use of imported coal which contains lower ash in place of high ash Indian coals, impervious layers for both coal storage yard area and ash pond area, and dry ash disposal system.
