Kasargod, March 3: Contradicting the statement of Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar that Endosulfan was a harmless pesticide, Congress leader V M Sudheeran on Thursday said various lobbies were at work to retain Endosulfan in the country.
Speaking to media persons here, he said the pesticide lobby was active to deter the country from taking a stand in favour of the countrywide ban on Endosulfan at the Persistent Organic Pollutants, POP, conference in Stockholm on April 11, 2010.
He said while 74 countries of the world had banned Endosulfan, the Union government was taking a stand favourable to the pesticide lobby in the country. Sudheeran said these countries had banned Endosulfan after conducting in-depth studies about the harmful effect of Endosulfan.
Sudeeran later addressed the volunteers who were on an indefinite fast in front of the PCK go down in Peria demanding help to the victims by the PCK.
