Mangalore, March 4: Mangalore police have taken two persons into custody in connection with a major fraud case that created shock wave across the city.
The arrested are Shekar Bhat alias Purushotham Bhat (43), a resident of Shishila in Belthangady taluk and Ashok Kumar (44), resident of Kottara, who are among others facing the charge of defrauding people under the pretext of investment scheme.
The development came after two people, who had invested a huge amount of money with one Global Index Investment Company (GIIC) operating in Mahendra Arcade complex, Karangalpady here, lodged separate complaints against it at Kadri Police station after realising that they were utterly deceived by the company.
On Friday, dozens of people, claimed to be the victims of GIIC, gathered in front of the Kadri police station demanding justice.
The mob accused the GIIC of duping a large number of people, who ventured into deal with them, in which they were assured of double returns of for the investment.
“Hundreds of people, who have invested money like me with GIIC, suffered huge losses irrespective of caste and religion,” said one of the victims, who came to lodge complaint against the fraudulent along with other victims.
It is said that although the GIIC (previously named as Index Daily), which became popular last year, was paying the installment in the beginning apparently to take people into confidence with regard to the scheme, had stopped paying the amount that was promised from past two months.
Kadri police said that investigation is on to find out the root of the issue as the real owner of the GIIC is not exactly known.
