National Highway No. 17 blocked for three hours

Karwar, March 5: The “rasta roko” agitation by members of Sand Extractors and Transporters' Association, Karwar, disrupted the movement of vehicles on National Highway 17 for more than three hours on Friday.

The highway was blocked at the Majali check-post on Karwar-Goa border by the association members in support of their demands.

The students taking the examinations and patients being taken to hospitals, besides general public, bore the brunt of the agitation as thousands of vehicles were blocked on either side of the border by a handful of agitators.

The association was demanding lifting of ban on the transportation of the Kali river sand to Goa from Karwar.

The Government had banned the inter-State transportation after some people made unsuccessful attempt to export the river sand to Mauritius about two years ago.

Although the river sand was allowed to be sold in the domestic market, the union leaders were adamant that they would sell sand in Goa.

This was the second road block staged by the association in the last one year.

A few months ago National Highway 17 was blocked by the association and sand was transported to Goa defying the police and the administration.

But on Friday, the police blocked the sand-laden lorries at Kali bank and did not allow them to move to the border. About 50 protesters squatted on the road demanding that they be allowed to take the lorries to Goa Although the road block began at 10 a.m., the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police arrived at the spot after one-and-a-half hours. The officials requested the agitators to clear the road but they refused.

After about 45 minutes of talk by the Superintendent of Police and the Deputy Commissioner, the agitators agreed to vacate the road.

They warned if sand transportation to Goa was not allowed by March 10, they would block the highway again on March 11.

The attitude of the district administration angered the commuters who had to wait under scorching sun for three hours.

Mark, a German national, wondered how the police allowed a handful of people to hold the area to ransom.

Prema, who was going to Goa for treatment, said it was shameful that the senior officers were pleading with the protesters to vacate the road instead of acting sternly against them.

But a police officer said they were worried about criticism if they used force against the protesters.

Mangaluru: A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday, November 17, at Vazco Resort (VAZCO), situated at Battappadi Cross Road in Someshwara on the outskirts of the city, when three young women drowned in the resort’s swimming pool.

Disturbingly, an iPhone recording and CCTV footage captured their final moments, providing insights into the heartbreaking accident.

According to City Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal, the tragedy occurred at approximately 10:05 AM. The victims were identified as:

Keerthana N (21) from Devaraj Mohalla, Hebbal Second Stage, Vijayanagar Post.
Nishitha M.D (21) from 4th Cross, Kuribarahalli, Mysuru.
Parvathi S (20) from Ramanuja Road, K.R. Mohalla, Mysuru.

Sequence of Events

The three women had checked into Room No. 2 of the resort on the morning of November 16 and stayed overnight. On Sunday morning, around 10 AM, they entered the swimming pool to play. Reports suggest that they placed their clothes poolside and set an iPhone to record the activity.

Initial findings indicate one woman slipped underwater and began to struggle. When the second attempted a rescue, she too drowned, followed by the third woman. Within minutes, the tragedy claimed all three lives. CCTV footage from the resort corroborates the sequence, showing the young women struggling before succumbing to the water.

Investigation Underway

The resort staff discovered the lifeless bodies and immediately raised the alarm. Ullal Police Inspector H N Balakrishna and his team are conducting an investigation. Preliminary reports suggest the women were non-swimmers, and the lack of safety measures contributed to the tragedy.

The resort is owned by Manohar, as per police records. While the formal case is yet to be registered, the incident has raised serious questions about safety protocols at resorts offering pool facilities.

voting.jpg

Bengaluru: An estimated overall 10.14 per cent voter turnout was recorded during the first two hours, since the voting began for bypolls to three Assembly segments in Karnataka on Wednesday, election officials said.

The voting began at 7 am and will go on till 6 pm.

More than seven lakh voters are eligible to cast their votes in about 770 polling stations in Shiggaon, Sandur and Channapatna, where a total of 45 candidates are in the fray.

While Channapatna recorded 10.34 per cent voter turnout till 9 am, it was 10.08 per cent in Shiggaon, and 9.99 per cent in Sandur, election officials said.

Voters, including women and elderly were seen queuing up in front of polling booths in these segments.

By-polls for Sandur, Shiggaon, and Channapatna are necessitated, as the seats fell vacant following the election of their respective representatives -- E Tukaram of Congress, former CM Basavaraj Bommai of BJP, and Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy of JD(S) -- to Lok Sabha in May elections.

As many as 31 candidates are in the fray from Channapatna, while Sandur and Shiggaon have six and eight contenders, respectively.

Elaborate security arrangements have been made in the three segments for the smooth conduct of the polls.

The by-polls will witness a straight fight between the ruling Congress and BJP in Sandur and Shiggaon segments, while in Channapatna, JD(S) which is part of the NDA alliance is in contest against the grand old party.

Among the three segments, Channapatna is considered to be a "high profile", where the contest is between C P Yogeeshwara, a five time MLA from the segment and former Minister, who joined the Congress quitting BJP ahead of nomination, and actor-turned -politician Nikhil Kumaraswamy, who is Kumaraswamy’s son and former PM H D Deve Gowda's grandson.

BJP's Bharath Bommai, son of Basavaraj Bommai, is fighting Congress Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan, who had faced defeat against the former Chief Minister in the 2023 Assembly polls, in Shiggaon.

Bharath Bommai and his father cast their vote at a polling booth in Shiggaon segment.

In Sandur, Bellary MP Tukaram's wife E Annapurna of Congress is contesting from the seat vacated by her husband, against, BJP ST Morcha president Bangaru Hanumanthu, who is considered close to party leader and former mining barron G Janardhan Reddy.

Annapurna, Tukaram and other family members cast their votes at a booth in the segment.

With Nikhil Kumaraswamy and Bharath Bommai contesting, the third generation of Gowda and Bommai families are in the fray in this by-poll. Both their fathers and grandfathers have served as Karnataka's Chief Ministers in the past.
