M'lore: Fishermen safe as boat catches fire

March 6, 2011
Mangalore, March 6: Nine fishermen were rescued from a fishing boat that caught fire at least four nautical miles off the coast of Mangalore on Saturday evening.

The 57 feet-long fishing vessel, St Anthony, bearing registration No. 91 KA-01 PF-0056, was ablaze for more than an hour before the fire was brought under control.

Speaking to Coastaldigest.com, Joseph D'Souza, the husband of Saritha D'Souza, the owner of the boat, said that the tragedy, which occurred due to short circuit, while fishing in the Arabian Sea at around 6:30 pm, resulted in an estimated loss of Rs 65 lakh.

He said all the nine stranded fishermen were rescued by the crew members of two other fishing boats 'Yamuna Prasad' and 'Shaun Peter', which were sailing around the 'St Anthony', during the incident.

A crew member of 'Yamuna Prasad', who wanted to be known only as Kuriyan, said he saw the fire from afar, blazing up to two storeys high.

After bringing the nine fishermen back to shore immediately, the same two boats, towed the ill-fated boat, which had left for fishing on February 28 , towards the south and reached the fishing port at around 3:30 am on Sunday.

Later, the coast guard officials and insurance officers visited the boat. Joseph D'Souza has registered a complaint at Pandeshwara Police station.
